Why did you begin blogging, and what inspired the name “Tulip Louise?”
I first began blogging while working for Neiman Marcus. My story is similar to most bloggers to date–I needed a creative outlet to break the corporate routine. Excited about my new project, I naïvely emailed the new site to my boss. She said she enjoyed what she saw, but asked that I stop writing due to their non-compete clause. She was lovely enough to ask me to write for the NM blog, but my little heart was crushed! After that, I could never bring myself to let go of the domain name www.tuliplouise.com. I always felt the need to hold onto it! Once I decided to pursue wardrobe styling full-time last year, the blog came back to life! The name “Tulip Louise” was born my final semester of college when our class required us to create a detailed business plan for a hypothetical boutique. The name stuck!
How would you define your personal style?
Romantic chic? I’m all about dresses and wide skirts with a focus on the waistline, feminine blouses, tailored jackets and blazers, and obvious classics like fitted denim and a great t-shirt. We do love to dress in the South!
Wardrobe-wise, are you ever inclined to take any risks?
Most of the time I enjoy taking risks in subtle ways, like with a peek-a-boo bra strap or the hem of a slip peeking out from a dress. Although if the mood strikes, I will wear some daring things–I just have so much fun with my clothes! Life is too short to wear a bad outfit.
Anna’s favorite perfume is Trish McEvoy Blackberry and Vanilla Musk. Evian Facial Spray is a must-have to beat the summer heat!
With a career in fashion (especially in styling), do you find that your personal preferences in clothing or beauty evolve constantly?
My clothing choices change daily–they can be altered by weather, mood, recent inspirations, etc! I’ll {usually} stay within my soft, pulled-together wardrobe aesthetic, but will throw in different pieces to adjust each day. On the other hand, my beauty regimen is pretty basic. With makeup, I tend to be super loyal to my products {i.e. L’oreal voluminous mascara, Chanel brow kit}. Hair color? I’m a total wild card.
Left, a vintage St. John handed down to Anna from her mom. Right, favorite watches {Rolex, Michele, Timex}.
Anna enjoys mixing unexpected textures and patterns together!
Anna wears a striped sweater with ASOS leather shorts, plus her grandmommie’s turquoise strand (all while trying to introduce her cat, Willow, to Glitter Guide!).
What one item in your closet always seems to make you smile?
Gahhh, that’s such a hard question! I’ve been a curator for years and years, so it’s hard to choose just one from my collection. The Phillip Lim recycled zipper dress from ’09 is an oldie-but-a-goodie, the Louis Vuitton Speedy I saved {and saved} for is a classic. The black + gold studded Jimmy Choos I scored at my first market hold a special place in my heart. Oh! And the vintage Harley Davidson tank I found when living in New York. Okay, I’m stopping now.
