How To: The High Bun

high bun tutorial

It’s Jessie here, Glitter Guide design contributor and blogger at Sweet Thing! I am thrilled to start a new column sharing some fun hair and makeup tutorials. The high bun is truly one of the easiest hairstyles to do and has been my go-to for days when I just can’t be bothered to wash my hair or when I’m in a hurry. Effortless hair has never been so effortless. I love the way it looks on it’s own or even with a scarf tied around.

1. Start out with next day hair (meaning you haven’t washed it for a day). I like to spray in some dry shampoo at my roots for extra volume. I use Batiste Colored Dry Shampoo. Brush back your hair and place in a high ponytail, leaving out your bangs and some face framing pieces.

2. Back comb (tease) your ponytail using a brush or comb until it is full and messy. I use a Mason Pearson brush.

3. Twist the teased ponytail and wrap it into a bun, leaving it slightly messy.

4. Secure the bun with bobby pins all the way around.

5. Separate your bangs in the middle using a comb and tuck the stray pieces of hair behind your ears. Spray with hairspray to finish. I use L’Oreal Elnett.

Voilà!

This is a great little tutorial. I’ve been looking to buy dry shampoo recommended by someone – do you suggest Batiste’s original, nonscented spray or the blush scent?

    Thanks!
I use the batiste brunette colored dry shampoo and I love it.The spray is slightly tinted so it doesn’t make your hair white like some other dry shampoos. It also has a vanilla sent, if you are in to that. I also have the original batiste and it has a more of a fresh scent, but it’s not my favorite. I have never tried blush or nonscented. Hope this helps!

cute! i use PSSST dry shampoo which you can find at some drugstores. it’s my fav & works better than most pricier brands I’ve tried (although batiste looks cheap too!)

Great tutorial! What do you suggest for those of us who have grown out our fringe? I’m a little weary of leaving my forehead out there for all the world to see.

Comb forward some hair closest to your face, almost creating faux bangs.
Part the hair in the middle and comb the hair over your forehead.
Tuck the ends behind your ears, so it looks like the model above.
If your hair is too long by your face, use bobby pins to secure it .
