There’s no doubt about it — mod styles are having a moment. And the perfect retro ‘do to complement fashion’s Twiggy-like looks is the side ponytail. We caught up with hair extraordinaire Deborah Czerwinski of San Francisco’s Devil’s Hairhouse to learn three fresh and totally modern takes on the throwback style (modeled by the lovely Krystal Bick of This Time Tomorrow).
For all styles, start with dry, clean hair. (Give your locks a good brushing, too.)
Knotty Girl:
1. Rub a dab of frizz-free polish on your hands. Apply to the bottom of your hair first, then the top.
2. Leave out two sections of hair. Criss-cross them around the elastic to conceal it.
3. Grab the ends. On one side, loop the piece of hair over twice. On the other side, thread the hair under once.
4. Secure a hair pin underneath the ponytail.
