Style at Home: Jennifer McGarigle of Floral Art LA

After studying at FIDM and working in the fashion industry, Jennifer McGarigle took her style sensibility and translated into a new realm by establishing Floral Art in Los Angeles. Jennifer’s stunning fashion forward floral creations have been displayed for celebrities and at weddings. She even started a line of home furnishings inspired by the flowers that she loves. Her flair for style and love of home decorating are totally evident in her gorgeous California home. Bright colors and airy details combine with enviable outdoor living spaces to make her house the perfect spot for a floral artist to call home.

  • You have such a fun design aesthetic. What inspires your design taste?
It comes from an eclectic mix of appreciations. I like blending vintage pieces that honor the past and bring warmth to clean, minimal environments. I also connect with modern pieces that are  fresh, colorful and light. I’m inspired by everyday beauty — flowers, art,  nature, the sky…

  • What is your favorite room in your home?
The back lounge, which was converted from a garage. It’s peaceful and open with a lot of light, and is a relaxing place for me to work, read and meditate.  It also serves as my guest quarters.
“The back deck is the outdoor living room. When friends come over, we sit around the chimnea fire pit and have dinners under the arbor.”

  • What is the most sentimental piece in your home?
A vintage wood coffee table from my grandmother’s home and a beautiful floral vase that was passed down to me from my auntie.
“Me and the pugs (Daisy Pickles and Roger) under the Cecil Brunner arbor. In the spring, these climbing roses burst into soft pinks.”

  • We love your backyard! Do you entertain outside a lot?
Yes! The decks were built to extend the entertaining space of the house. It’s my outdoor living room!

  • “The buffet is part of the Floral Art Home Collection. The dinning room table was matched to the same green we use in our logo. It’s always been my favorite color. “

  • What are your favorite flowers to decorate a home with?
In the winter, I love having fresh Paper white bulb plants indoors and out. They’re simple, fragrant and last for weeks. In the spring, I like cutting fresh sweet peas from the garden — whether filling a big pitcher or several small vases with them — their delicate, sweet scent reminds me of childhood. Poppies, Peonies and Ranunculus are also among my favorites.
“The Bar has opalescent green tiles. Glasses mostly consist of an eclectic mix of odds and ends (above shelf) that a neighbor has collected for me over the years from antique swap meets. There’s never enough glasses here!”

  • Where are your favorite places to shop for home decor items online and in Los Angeles?
    Weego Home in Santa Monica!

  • “This old typewriter just looks cool! I keep it on my farm table desk to one side along with a stack of letters my mother wrote on the block print stationary she use to make. “

  • “The living room faces the front deck, which makes the room a little more expansive. The deck is enclosed by hedges which makes it private even when all the doors are open. “

  • How do you add sparkle to your life and to your home?
A lot of good friends, candlelight, flowers and a little bubbly!

I love the fact that her home is beautiful but doesn’t come off as pretentious or too “styled”. It looks like a welcoming, comfortable home that I could relax in. Love it!
