As we get into the bone-chilling days of winter, mastering the art of layering is a must. While it’s easy to just throw on every warm piece of clothing you own, there’s a chance you may end up looking like the Michelin man. Let’s try to avoid that, shall we?! Take a look at these two outfits: both will keep you warm and cozy, yet still chic and put-together.
Step 1: Start with a basic blouse, like a classic white button-down or even a versatile chambray shirt. It’s best to start with a piece that fits somewhat closely to the body.
Step 2: Add your second layer. Try a sweater with a bit of a print or embellishment to add some interest to the look. This layer can be a bit less form-fitting. As long as it fits over your first layer without too much hassle, you’re good to go.
Step 3: Next, go for a layer that will showcase the masterpiece (yes, it is a masterpiece!) you’ve just created. Try a moto jacket or an oversized cardigan—something open in the front.
Step 4: Lastly, it’s time to accessorize. I opted for a bold necklace to bring even more focus towards layers 1 and 2, my favorite part of the outfit.
Step 1: Start with a simple t-shirt. This time, try a print or something a little less basic—just make sure it fits close to the body. I went with this thin striped tee from Madewell, a perfect layering piece.
Step 2: Now, add a casual piece that won’t cover your first layer. I chose an army green button-down, but you could also do a simple cardigan.
Step 3: Next, add the piece that will create depth! This poncho/wrap is an amazing layering piece since it’s so easy to just toss over anything. However, you could also do an oversized sweater or even a blazer.
Step 4: Accessorize! Scarves are a great layering piece, particularly in the winter. They’ll keep you extra warm and also make the outfit look complete.
