Style At Home: Caitlin Moran Of Glitter Guide

Our Editorial Director Caitlin Moran is moving—but  before she bids farewell to her tiny one-bedroom apartment in historic downtown Annapolis, we thought we’d share a peek inside. Caitlin’s personal blog Style Within Reach focuses on fabulous and accessible fashion, and her sleek and stylish apartment reflects her exceptional talent for creating a beautiful look with a modest budget. According to Caitlin, most of the furnishings in her gorgeous space come from humble, big-box store Ikea—living proof that you don’t need to shop at Jonathan Adler just to feel like you’ve got a high-end home!

  • Tell us about your blog Style Within Reach and your work at Glitter Guide.
I actually started my blog close to 5 years ago, which seems like forever ago in the blogging world! I was living in NYC at the time and felt the pressures of looking fantastic all the time working in fashion. I didn’t have a huge budget for clothing, so I wanted a place where I could showcase my affordable finds. It kind of grew from there.
I met Taylor through the blogosphere before she started Glitter Guide, and I have been helping her pretty much from the start in different ways. I quit my full-time day job in September of last year as my role at Glitter Guide grew and I took on more responsibility. I couldn’t be happier to do what I love every day!

  • “This is the first apartment I furnished myself, so I was working with a modest budget. Most of the furniture is from Ikea. The rug is from Rugs USA.” -Caitlin

  • So many people blog about high-end fashion. What made you want to blog about more accessible, attainable style?
I always wanted my blog to be relatable and authentic. I love high-end fashion—going to the runway shows and reading glossy magazines, but the reality of my life is that I buy most of my clothes from places like H&M, Zara and Forever21. I love to splurge on classics but I wanted my blog to be a reflection of my daily life.

  • How would you describe your home’s design?
I’d say it’s eclectic and colorful! It’s forever a work in progress but I think it really reflects my personal style. A mix of high and low, vintage and handmade pieces. I’ve worked hard at making our small space feel like home and tried to make it as uncluttered as possible even though I have a lot of stuff.

  • “This coffee table “tray” is actually a clear acrylic picture frame from Michael’s turned upside down!” -Caitlin

  • What’s your favorite thing about home décor right now?
I love how people are really taking command of their interior design and homes! The blogosphere and Pinterest definitely play a part, but I really feel like there’s a design movement happening that never was before. Every day people are putting thought into curating a home that’s a reflection of their style—something that I think used to be left to high-end interior designers. I think a reflection of this movement is how accessible on-trend design is from places like Target!

“Painting the stripes down our long hallway was a tedious process but really lightened up the space. They make me smile every time I look at them!” -Caitlin

  • “I scored this mirror for a bargain at The Barn Show and it’s one of my favorite pieces. If you live in Maryland or DC it’s worth a trip!” -Caitlin

  • You’re moving soon! What are you most looking forward to when it comes to decorating your new space?
Everything! I love starting with a blank canvas. My boyfriend and I are moving into a house with a bigger kitchen, dining room and yard—so I’ll have my hands full with DIY projects. I think I’ll incorporate more neutrals this time around with pops of color. I was so inspired by Liz‘s home recently on Glitter Guide!

“Most of the artwork in our home is my own or was purchased online.” -Caitlin

  • “I love vintage barware and recently opened up an online shop with my sister called Cin Cin Vintage. She gave me this set of cordial glasses years ago and they are one of my favorite possessions.” -Caitlin

  • “I found this paper pig at Michaels and gave her a coat of gold spray paint. Everyone always comments on it!” -Caitlin

  • What’s your best advice for creating a stylish home on a modest budget?
    1. Think outside the box. I used a vintage chair to hold coffee table books and act as a side table. I also transformed an Ikea bookcase into a bar.
    2. Paint! Color is an affordable way to drastically change your décor. The stripes down our hallway cost a mere $30 (plus hours of time, of course!) but gave the dark and narrow space a dramatic makeover.
    3. Thrift & salvage. Visit your local thrift stores for pieces with good bones that are begging for a fresh coat of paint. I found my bar cart (not pictured) at Goodwill for $20 and transformed it with a coat of gold spray paint.
    4. Artwork. Paint it yourself or search Etsy for affordable prints. Inexpensive frames and mattes can be found at Michaels and Ikea. Gallery walls or a grouping of frames is an easy way to refresh your room!

  • “We love to frame maps from our travels, and I fell in love with these giant ornate butterflies at a dollar store in New York City. I knew I’d find a use for them one day!” -Caitlin

  • “Our bedroom is one of the only rooms that gets a lot of natural light, so it was important for me to make it feel airy and bright. I covered a $5 circular table with inexpensive fabric and topped it with glass for our nightstand. It also doubles as a storage area underneath!” -Caitlin

  • “I made most of the pillows in our place and a few are from Etsy and Overstock.” -Caitlin

  • Anett

Great feature with lots of inspiration! Where did Caitlin buy the amazing leopard print notebook?

    • Caitlin

Hi Anett! The leopard notebook is actually an agenda by MOMAgenda and it’s from the MYAgenda line :)

  • elizabeth

Love the little details! Especially like the clever use of a silver tray for a chalkboard… I’m wondering what the paint colour is in the master bedroom..not sure if it is a light turqouise or light blue, but it looks fabulous!

    • Caitlin

Hi Elizabeth! The paint was custom created to match a lacquer box I have (and love!) – it’s a light turquoise but has quite a bit of green in it. Thanks for the kind words!

Oh my goodness, the coffee table ‘tray’ is so genius! I’m totally doing that this weekend! Clear acrylic trays are also so pricey.

I love Caitlin’s style and apartment!

These features are one of my favourite things about Glitter Guide. I would love to see Rachel from Pink Peonies or Julia from Gal Meets Glam in a Style At Home feature!

Hi Caitlin – I love your desk and would love to use it as a vanity. Where did you get it, and what is the name? Thanks!
