Spring is the perfect time for seasonal cleaning, and this year, make sure that cleaning includes your makeup bag. From expired lip gloss to ancient brushes, we recommend following these steps for de-cluttering your vanity. We know it’s a tedious process, but we tend to look on the bright side … the beauty-shopping spree you’ll get to do after!

First, de-clutter your makeup bag. Take some time to sort through all your makeup and beauty products. Toss anything you don’t use anymore and read on to see our guide to figure out what products may be expired. (image)

Once a tube of your favorite mascara is open, oxygen affects the product and starts to collect bacteria. Ideally, every two to three months you should be replacing your mascara. (image)

Lipsticks and lip gloss typically last one year or less. To prolong the use of your favorite lippy, avoid sharing and dispose of them if they become dry or change color. (image)

Foundation should be replaced every 6 to 12 months. Keep your powders in a cool, dry place. Pressed powder has shelf life up to two years and loose powder can last up to three. (image)

Prolong the life of makeup brushes by using a cleanser once or twice a month. Once you notice hairs starting to fall out, it’s time to toss them. (image)

Then, figure out what’s missing. Too many eyeshadows and no more concealer? Make a list of what you no longer have. Finally, head to your nearest beauty retailer and stock up on all the new must-haves you need (definitely the most fun part!). (image)
