  • We’re such big fans of 100 Layer Cake. How did the concept come about and when did it launch?
We’re so glad you are a fan, thank you! We love Glitter Guide too! My friend Jillian got married, had a blast planning her own wedding and asked if I wanted to collaborate with her on a wedding site. I love starting fun new projects on a whim, so I agreed. At the time, I was working as a designer for an interactive firm with another friend, Kristina, who was also in the process of planning her wedding and documenting it on her inspiring personal blog. We all came together and voila… 100 Layer Cake was born in 2009! It was serendipitous — we all had a similar vision but never any mastermind plan, really. I remember how surprised we were at the beginning when we started getting lots of visitors. It grew into something we could have never imagined, out of our love for design, decorating and entertaining.

  • “I love reading through cookbooks and trying new recipes. Plus the design is so inspiring! When I designed the 100 Layer Cake site, I got some of my inspiration from cookbook designs.”

  • Congrats on launching the new and darling 100 Layer Cakelet. What inspired you and your team to start a kid’s site?
Many of our bride readers continue reading 100 Layer Cake after they have tied the knot, for party and home decor inspiration. A natural progression for many of those brides is to have families, of course. We wanted to give them a place where they could get stylish inspiration for kid parties, kid fashion, and family photo shoot ideas. But in all honesty, my two business partners have toddlers, so they needed an outlet for all their kid finds and fun ideas. I’m sure I’ll be in their club at some point soon.

“When we moved into this apartment, the space was raw and open, so we found this IKEA island that fit perfectly in the kitchen and made for extra workspace. It’s great for entertaining too. Our guests end up sitting here while I assemble the finishing touches for an appetizer or shake up a fancy cocktail. One day I hope to have a big marble island, fit for seating 6, but for now this one will do!”

  • Your home is so beautiful and light. Was this place hard to find? What was the process?
It surprisingly wasn’t too hard to find.. I think we saw it on Craigslist, went for a tour, and moved in a month later. I love the view of the mountains (when the smog has cleared), and we can even see the Hollywood sign in the distance from our living room!

  • “Here is a wink of the antique glassware I’ve collected. The obsession began when I started searching for pieces for our wedding and it has continued ever since. I’ve even garnered the nickname ‘Goldmanda’ from my husband because I can’t resist buying up anything glass with gold!”

  • How would you describe your interior decorating style?
Whimsical, glamourous, modern. My husband collects retro toys and signs, so we have a few of those around the house, mixed in with my feminine, glam touches. We both love color and contrasting spunky decor with sleek mid-century design, so we’re lucky our vision is pretty similar. I knew I married the right guy!

“I purchased these J. Crew sequin pants a few years ago, and I must say they are one of my favorite clothing purchases ever. Plus they never seem to go out of style! I usually dress them down with a baseball tee and some Converse shoes for a spunky high/low mix. They’re a pretty show-stopping piece and people always come up to me in public and ask where I got them. J. Crew discontinued selling them, but I’ve seen sequin pants on other sites.”

  • You recently got married, has that changed your home’s style and feel at all?
Um, a lot more gold seems to be present in the house. Ha! Our wedding planners made a huge sparkly gold heart backdrop for our dessert table that we now hang in our foyer. And, of course all of the antique glassware and vessels I collected still make a show. Plus, it’s a lot more organized without the paper bits, paint, invitation stacks and ribbon all over the house from wedding preparations! It was a disaster in here.

“Our living room has been a work-in-progress for a few years. My brother A.J. Halbrook is an artist, so we’ve been lucky to outfit our place with some of his paintings. The gold print is from the graffiti artist Faile, and the bright abstract painting is Michelle Armas. The hunt for the perfect couch was a bit of a long process and took over a year. We finally decided on the Petrie in charcoal from Crate and Barrel, which serves as a good neutral base for all the color in our living room. The occasional table behind the couch is from IKEA and brings an interesting dimension to the room, plus it is a good place to display bits and bobs. The tables and lamp here are mid-century pieces and the rug is from One Kings Lane.”

  • We love to entertain at our house, so we always have a few bar staples on hand. And, of course, bits of gold to make sipping even more luxurious. I have a bit of a vintage glassware obsession, and I simply can’t resist snatching up any pretties I find at antique fairs and thrift stores, such as the ones here. The walnut tray and small gold vase are from Crate and Barrel, the gold and white striped ice bucket is from One Kings Lane and the cowhide gold coasters were a bridal shower gift, by Calypso St. Barth. This photo is from our wedding day, the first time my husband and I saw each other. It always takes me back to the overwhelming joy and happiness of that moment.”

  • Favorite room in the house?
Currently the bedroom is my fave. It used to be my least favorite room not too long ago but the decorating process has finally ended in there, so I can revel in a completed design. I had curtains made from cabana-striped fabric for our closet, scored a good deal on a Sputnik chandelier and mid-century wall hanging. It feels sort of Hollywood Regency, but in a relaxed way. The bedroom is a place where my creative ideas brew, while I’m reading or dreaming.

  • “We recently purchased the Crown bed from Crate and Barrel, and really dig it. I keep the bedding pretty neutral and change up the pillows and throw for a new (an inexpensive) look every season. The snakeskin tray is from Furbish, the gold French press is Bodum and the leopard throw is Tourance, from One Kings Lane.”

  • “I’m a pretty big lover of the clutch, but I’d rather splurge on a nice everyday purse, so I keep an eye out for inexpensive clutches. Zara makes stunning (and affordable) ones that rival the design of pricey ones on boutique sites.”

  • “Jo Malone has such lovely scents. I mix different ones to create unique concoctions but last year discovered their Cologne Intense Collection and fell in love with the mysterious, woodsy Oud & Bergamot scent. It’s my signature now. This Rablabs crystal platter was a wedding gift from my friend Jaimi and wow… it is one of the prettiest things in our house.

  • Favorite places to shop in LA for home decorating pieces?
The Rose Bowl and Long Beach flea markets are always great places for unique finds. I also like to enter the glassware wonderland of Bountiful in Venice. But most of my decor purchases as of late have been online. So many good sites to peruse! Occasionally I’ll splurge at High Street Market, Horchow or Zinc Door. Furbish and One Kings Lane are pretty great for reasonably-priced, trendy decor items.

  • “Pattern makes me happy. I never tire of the beautiful repetition and shapes. Recently, I discovered UK stationery designers, Paper Stock and want everything they make. Hello, paper influenced by seasonal fashion trends? Brilliant!  My sunglasses here are Dita Vesoul, mini binder from Russel and Hazel, and Mast Brothers chocolate bar. They are the kings of pattern in the culinary world.”

  • How long has it taken to get your home design to where it’s at now? What’s been the biggest challenge?
I’d say a few years of slowly collecting, saving for good pieces and mixing styles in the right way. I like to live with a look for a bit and make little nudges to get it right.

The biggest challenge was finding items that resonate with our style, but not spending a ton of dough. I get pretty scrappy when see a piece I like, and go into the online vortex to find it at the best price. Whatever it takes, I’ll find it!

“Many an hour are spent here, creating, researching, communicating, so I had to make it pretty, organized and functional. Container Store had the best desktop filing boxes I found. The desk cabinets are from IKEA, and now all of my materials, notebooks, cards, tape and miscellaneous electronic cables have a designated place! The rug is from One Kings Lane and my pen cup is a thrift store gem. Flowers really do make me a happier worker, so I usually have a pretty arrangement displayed on my desk. This one is by Julianne de Silva.”

  • Favorite item in your home?
My inspiration board is a favorite since it displays cherished photos and notes, pretty patterns and colors that are ever-changing and inspire me every day.

  • Do you work from home? How do you stay inspired?
I do. With Pinterest, blogs, decor, food and fashion magazines, it seems like there is too much inspiration to stay focused! I almost get overwhelmed with the amount of amazing designs and ideas online. I’m lucky to have friends who are designers or in a creative industry, so I’m always inspired by them too.

  • How would you describe your personal style?
Relaxed glamour, with an edge. I love fun pants, worn denim, statement heels, structured shirts and dresses, and always, an edgy bracelet or ring.

“My top here is from Bloomingdales, heels by J. Crew, bracelet from Young Frankk and skirt by Kelly Wearstler. I love that lady.”

  • Favorite accessory or piece of clothing in your collection?
It probably changes monthly. I have a small black faux fur stole that dresses up an old jean jacket I’ve been sporting since college. The minute I wrap it around my neck, I feel like a movie star. Oh..and my DITA Vesoul Sunglasses are one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. The shape is amazing and perfectly polishes my look.

  • “I have an entourage of shoes but mostly only wear a few pairs. These boots are Zara and I’ve worn them about 100 times. Leopard heels from JCrew, hot pink heels by Nina. I purchased these Nicholas Kirkwood metallic bow heels to accompany my wedding reception dress, the pink suede shoes with glitter backs are from Topshop, and the blue suede wedges from J. Crew.”

  • “Tucker and I are major buds. His mother abandoned her litter and I adopted him when he was only a couple weeks old. I bottle fed him, taught him how to lap water, and he’s been the sweetest companion for 12 years. My bracelets here are from J. Crew, Need Supply, and Shopbop. The obsidian arrowhead ring is a gift from a friend, made by Charles Albert on Shopbop.”

  • How do you sparkle?
Encouraging and inspiring others to find what they were meant to do, no matter what their age, brings me great joy. I try to excite people to achieve more than they thought they could. I’m still working on it myself too. There is so much possibility in life. I like to dream big.

Other ways I sparkle… nails, pants, shoes, jewelry, coffee mugs, fruit bowls, champagne glasses.. I could go on and on. Do they make gold mascara?

“My skirt is Sass and Bide, from Net-a-porter, top is Zara, shoes are Audrey Brooke.”

  • Alyssa Gapske
