Our Favorite Self-Tanners

A DIY tanning treatment at home can yield some unwanted side effects– like orange skin, a funky smell and streaks a plenty. That’s why we’ve rounded up six tried and true self tanners in a variety of applications to make sure you avoid any mishaps for the best faux glow yet.

  • Bliss A Tan for All Seasons ($36) Avoid any awkward streaks with Bliss’ advanced, sunless tanner spray. It’s packed with aloe vera, antioxidants and a transfer-resistant bronzer. We also treasure this spray for another common insecurity (cellulite!).

  • bareMinerals Faux Tan Gradual Glow Sunless Face Tanner ($24) This new and quick-drying formula offers a sun-kissed complexion using unique tanning peptide (for a subtle glow) and a mineral copper complex (to prolong the tan), while plant-derived emollients help lock in moisture without clogging pores.

  • Jergens Natural Glow & Protect Daily Moisturizer with SPF 20 ($9.49) Fair skinned beauties will love this drugstore favorite. A daily moisturizer, Jergens Natural Glow gives skin a natural and healthy-looking color within several days.

  • St. Tropez Self Tan Gel ($24.50) St. Tropez is one of our favorite self-tanner brands, and we especially love this tanner in gel form. We recommend using an Applicator Mitt ($6.50) for an even application that won’t stick to arm or leg hairs.

  • L’Oreal Sublime Bronze ProPerfect Salon Airbrush Self-Tanning Mist ($10.99) This no-rub, wide-angle spray mist applicator makes self-tanning a cinch (not to mention makes our wallets extremely happy!).

  • Kate Somerville Somerville 360 Tanning Towelettes (8 ct., $48) For all you lazy tanners out there, Kate Somerville’s paraben-free self-tanning formula provides a uniform, quick and even application by simply swiping on in a circular motion.

I’m having the worst time with self tanners. Maybe it’s because I’m too pale to begin with, but even Jergens still leaves me with an orange tint. They also claim to have fixed the smell, but it still lingers for days! Help!

Alyssa– I can totally relate. I am super pale but I swear by St. Tropez. I also liked testing the L’Oreal Sublime glow too. I don’t find Jergens smell to be too overwhelming but maybe that’s just me. Thanks for reading!

I’ve heard that St. Tropez might be a good option for me. I think I will try it. Thank you so much Kara!

I got excited to see there was a list of self tanners on here because I’m always looking for the perfect tanner. But I wish you would add in your point of view in each description. As it stands, all you give us is the official product description. Just feels like an ad.

Hi there- don’t worry, this isn’t an ad. I have sampled and tried all of these tanners and would not recommend them otherwise. Thanks for reading!

Any suggestions for people that sadly allergic to DHA? Recommendations for body bronzers perhaps?

I stopped using self tanners in high school because of the smell Jergens gave off, but I’m willing to try them again! The bareMinerals face tanner looks great!

There’s still a smell, but it’s not as terrible. It’s worth another try!

Found your site a few weeks ago, have been obsessing ever since. Was ready to get back into self tanning season, thought to myself “I wonder if Glitter has a top list of self tanners published yet?”. Logged in, found this article posted yesterday! Great minds glitter alike! Thank you for everything you do!

I have tried that but it still seems to linger. I’ll try it again. Thanks!
