Lipstick Lover: Our Favorite Matte Lipsticks

Matte lips have quickly become one of our favorite makeup looks — the versatile style can easily be made dramatic (try a deep maroon shade), retro (think pin-up girl red), or demure (go for soft pink). The matte lipstick trend has been gaining popularity for quite some time now, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to find your perfect matte color. Between choosing a shade that looks great in a matte finish and finding a texture that’s velvety but not dry, the ideal matte lipstick is one of the harder items to find on our beauty shopping list. To make it easier, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite matte lip colors in a variety of shades — just choose a beauty look, and we guarantee these matte lip colors will help make it happen!

  • Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense #40 ($19): Our founder, Taylor, loves this super bright shade. “Even though it’s a matte finish it’s still a little pearly,” she says.

  • Bite Beauty High Pigment Matte Pencil ($24): Bite Beauty has a large range of matte pencils in bright colors that are sure to make a statement. We are partial to “Poppy,” a bright, classic red.

  • NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil ($25) : One of our beauty editors, Kara, favors the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Never Say Never for night (pictured), and Roman Holiday for day. “It’s such an easy, on-the-go application and the texture makes it feel like a lipstick, not to mention the color wears really well,” she says.

  • NYX Matte Lipstick ($3.49) : Our Editorial Director, Caitlin, loves NYX’s matte lipsticks. “They have a great assortment of colors and you can’t beat the price, “Audrey” is my favorite for every day,” she says.

  • M.A.C “Lady Danger” ($15): Erin, our other beauty expert, likes Lady Danger by MAC. “It’s the perfect pinup red and has enough moisture to avoid that yucky dry feeling matte lipsticks can leave after a few hours,” she says.

  • Origins Matte Stick in “Berry” ($16): Origins offers a handful of dramatic matte shades with a velvety feel, but we love the warm, earthy look of their “Berry” shade.

  • Stila Convertible Color in”Petunia” ($25): Our intern Kate loves the bright, fresh look Stila’s convertible color has when used on lips: matte, but not dry. The compact doubles as creme blush, too!

  • Tarte LipSurgence Matte Lip Tint in “Lucky” ($24): Tarte’s lip tints provide saturated, full coverage that lasts all day. We love the demure look of this light pink shade.
