  • Can you tell us a little bit about your company, Modern Eve?
Modern Eve is a lifestyle blog that focuses on the latest trends in fashion and home décor. I also contribute to various online and print publications, including The Nest, 55 Downing Street Blog, and The Etsy Blog.

Last year, I launched to & from with my business partner Meg Biram. We’re extremely excited about our second annual Holiday issue due in November.

I also recently started a new blog, Raw Hearted, where I am getting more personal and focusing on my writing.

  • How would you describe your decorating style?
My style is modern and feminine (but not girlie), with a side of boho and an occasional edge.

  • What was the inspiration behind your office décor?
I wanted to create a space that was comfortable, uncluttered, and yet creative. I didn’t have specific inspiration, but just kept collecting things that I loved. It’s amazing how when you do that, seemingly contradictory things will come together.

  • This eraser says, “Smart Women Make Changes.” I couldn’t agree more!

  • My husband is my biggest supporter. I am so grateful that he supports my dreams, but at the same time, helps keep me grounded.

  • What was your favorite part of designing your office? What was the most challenging?
Unlike the rest of my house, which I share with my husband, I was able to make all of the final decorating decisions for my office. It was so fun to collect random things I loved, from a cardboard unicorn head to a vintage malachite box, and find a place for them.

Window treatments are always a challenge for me. In fact, these are the first curtains I’ve committed to in our house; and we’ve lived there for 6 years! Thankfully, I have no regrets.

  • Your business deals with so many different aspects of marketing and new media! How do you balance everything?
I am sill figuring it out! The hardest part about owning your business is that you constantly feel like you can be doing something more. It’s difficult to turn things “off” in the evening, on the weekends and even on holidays. But, the main reason I’ve always wanted to work for myself is so that I could maintain a healthy work-life balance. Keeping my priorities in check, learning to say, “no”, and staying focused on my goals, instead of getting caught in the comparison trap, have been the keys to maintaining my sanity.

  • I love mixing patterns. Chevron, snake print and Aztec all go together, as long as you stay in the same color family.

  • Does your interior design taste reflect your fashion sense?
Most definitely! I really see my style translating across all areas of my life. I love modern and simple designs, but also have a strong appreciation for patterns, especially geometric, tribal and animal print. You can find all of these in my closet and in every room in my house.

I think both my wardrobe and my home reflect an appreciation for quality design, without sacrificing comfort and functionality. Fashion and interior design is fun, but it has to make sense for my lifestyle. The only area I see a real difference is with accessories. I love home accessories, but tend to keep my everyday jewelry and accessories pretty simple. I don’t like to feel weighed down.

These Loeffler Randall sandals are my favorite purchase of the summer! I wear them almost every day.

  • My office closet is home to extra entertaining, gift-wrap and craft supplies. These Elfa carts keep things looking organized and easy to find.

  • Every room needs a tabletop surface that can be home to various curiosities. I love how all of these sculptural objects go together. And a vintage banner reminds me of my favorite mantra, “Be Kind”.

  • What are your favorite parts of running Modern Eve?
I love being plugged into the design world, both fashion and interior design, and the opportunity to meet with, and collaborate with, interesting creatives and brands. The inspiring women (and men) I have met through blogging, consulting and freelance writing make everything worth it.

  • I’ve recently been finding a lot of inspiration in poetry. This little collection from Pablo Neruda is one of my favorites.

  • I have an addiction to cloth napkins — they’re the best way to spice up a table or establish a party theme!

  • Where do you find inspiration, both for blogging and decorating?
Like most bloggers, I find a lot of inspiration online on Pinterest and my RSS reader, but I find that getting out and seeing designs in person is more inspiring. I love hunting for new designers at local boutiques, checking out a modern home tour, or visiting local showrooms. Seeing design live, in its environment, in scale and context, is a much more creative experience for me.

  • My inspiration board holds magazine cutouts, paint samples, photos, and other items that are currently inspiring me.

  • I do almost everything at my desk. Thanks to various acrylic desk accessories and a wooden supply caddy, my office supplies are easily accessible, but not cluttered.

  • Even though my work is digital, I still take notes and make lists by hand. I exclusively use the Flair Felt Tip Pen from Paper Mate, but I also love these wooden pencils, found at Home Goods.

  • Can you share your goals for Modern Eve?
Someday I hope to move beyond just editorial into product design and e-commerce. I was planning on opening an online store this fall, before I found out I was pregnant. The timeline on that has been delayed a little, but it’s still on my radar.

This print from Emily Ley is great reminder when I’m feeling discouraged or stressed.

  • We hear you’re expecting a baby girl! What will parenthood mean for your business? And, most importantly, have you started planning the nursery?
Yes! My husband and I are excepting our first child, a daughter, in January. I am not really sure yet how she’ll effect my business, but I know it’s inevitable. I’m definitely spending a lot more time looking at baby clothes and modern baby gadgets. These products are going to start making their way onto the blog soon.

I have also started gathering inspiration for the nursery and hope to reveal some of my ideas on Modern Eve soon. It’s going to be feminine, but not too “baby.” I want to design something that can grow with her and also fits with the rest of our house.

  • I am obsessed with this chesterfield couch, but love it even more next to an über modern floor lamp. The balance between traditional feminine and sleek modern is one of my favorite design styles.

  • How do you sparkle?
I sparkle by slowing down, taking time for myself and focusing on being present. Whether it’s treating myself to a mani/pedi, diving into a good book or having a dance party alone with my cats, it’s these seemingly frivolous moments that encourage and rejuvenate me.

  • After working in busy, collaborative environments, sometimes working from home can get lonely. My co-worker, Goliath, is a welcome distraction.

  • My second co-worker, Chloé, likes to join me for afternoon meetings.

    Hey Glitter Guide!
Thank you for the feature! :)

  • ashley

from where is the artwork above the couch?

    • http://modern-eve.com Katie Anderson

Hi Ashley! The big canvas is actually a DIY project. It’s a large canvas from Michael’s, painted with chalkboard paint and then smudged with chalk. :) The “creativity” print is from Note to Self – http://society6.com/NotetoSelf/creativity-srT_Print

      • http://www.horsesandheels.com/ Raquel Lynn

Love the chalk art Katie! I might just have to do this DIY in my own space. Your office is amazing & I love what you said about mixing chevron, aztec & snakeskin prints from the same color scheme. Those are some of my favorite prints & I never thought I could have them all together, but when you put it that way, they work!

  • Kim

I think this might be my favorite photography on GG yet!

Hi Katie! Your office is so cute and congrats on the baby!
I was wondering where the metallic round ottoman is from-
I’ve been looking for one just like it that’s chair height.
    Thanks!
    Laurie

    • http://modern-eve.com Katie Anderson

Hi Laurie! Sorry I’m just seeing this. It was actually from Target, as part of their Calypso St. Barth collection a couple years ago. Rugs USA has some in different colors though – http://www.rugsusa.com/rugsusa/furniture/rugs-usa-moroccan-ottoman/turquoise/200SAPOU1G.html

      • Laurie Welsh

Ah ok. Yes I have a silver one as well but it’s too low. Yours looked couch height- much better. Oh well!!! Thanks for letting me know. ;)
