Sugar Paper Office Tour. Photographed by Bryce Covey for Glitter Guide

It’s no secret that we’re suckers for beautiful stationery here at Glitter Guide, and one of our absolute favorite resources for stocking up on gorgeous paper products has to be Sugar Paper based out of Los Angeles. We love the chic spin Sugar Paper founders Chelsea Shukov and Jamie Grobecker put on their letterpress products — they’ve become our go-to for anything from the perfect thank you card or journal to beautiful wrapping paper and coasters. Read on for a behind the scenes look at their LA studio, and to hear from Chelea about what inspires the duo and their designs and how they got started designing letterpress products.

  • How and when did you start Sugar Paper?
Sugar Paper began in 2003 with a love of letterpress and an appreciation for a simple and tasteful design aesthetic.

  • What sparked your interest in designing stationery?
It happened organically. I was learning graphic design and at the same time Jamie kept happening upon cool letterpress pieces from companies like Snow & Graham. We became enamored with letterpress printing and we simply taught ourselves how to do it. We both come from families who value art and who also value manners and decorum. It’s a funny combination, but one we both know.

  • What is your favorite area in your offices?
We love the sanctuary of our office, but mostly we love the open feel of the studio in general. Our design studio is a warehouse with terrific windows and high ceilings. The lighting is amazing.

  • What inspired the design of your offices?
We worked with Life.Style. by Shannon Wollack to help us design the space. Shannon and Brittany Zwickl are friends of ours who run an amazing design firm. They consulted with us on how to create a space that was both functional, but also helped “tell the story” of the brand. The colors and patterns throughout the space speak to our design aesthetic. The gold dot wallpaper in our office, the pale pink walls, the bright white bricks, it’s all very Sugar Paper.

  • What inspires you and your designs?
We find inspiration in odd places. Recently, we snapped a picture of a neon pink heart spray painted on the UCLA campus. Not exactly sure what it will inspire, but we collect images from all over town. I would say California inspires us, but specifically the Westside of Los Angeles.

  • How would you describe the aesthetic of the items you create?
Sugar Paper is timeless, classic and tasteful with a playful edge. It’s traditional social stationery with an updated feel.

  • What does Sugar Paper offer that similar shops don’t?
I love all of the paper shops that make up our industry. Paper shops are very cool places, owned by very cool people. I suppose I would say that Sugar Paper offers a specific aesthetic. Sugar Paper products are distinct. We believe that simple is beautiful and quality matters.

  • What has been your favorite experience in your career thus far?
Right now. We are working out of a new warehouse space, we have an incredible team of creative people working with us, and we are doing collaborations with some of our favorite brands. We feel grateful.

  • Are there any particularly popular items or trends you carry right now?
Gold foil is gorgeous and really popular. We get it. We love it too.

  • How do you sparkle?
    By being true to ourselves.

I suppose this article is about stationEry, not stationAry. They mean different things, check on the dictionary. If you need someone to proof-read your articles, send me an e-mail.

Clearly you missed the part in the interview where they talked about valuing manners. “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” Or how about “you catch more flies with honey”. Something to think about, Miss Maria.
