Shop Talk: Natalie Franke Photography

If we didn’t know better, we’d be convinced that Natalie Franke‘s life was part of a fairy tale! This Chesapeake Bay native is married to her high school sweetheart and has achieved international success as a wedding photographer — and she graduated from the University of Pennsylvania only two years ago! It’s easy to see why Natalie has become well-known for her sweet, romantic and slightly nostalgic photos (many of which she has contributed to Glitter Guide!). To our delight, Natalie agreed to share a peek inside her Annapolis office — plus details about her business, sense of style and beloved hometown.

  • How did you get into photography? Was it hard to launch a career right out of college?
I discovered photography when I was a senior in high school and began shooting weddings in my freshman year of college! By my senior year at UPenn, I was shooting weddings every other weekend and had built up my business so that it was fairly easy to roll right into photography full-time by graduation. Balancing both for four years was difficult, but it was truly worth the hard work!

  • Your office is so chic and inviting! Where did you pull inspiration for your work space?
My inspiration comes from my love of coastal living and my Annapolis upbringing. Shades of blue and grey, classic tones and clean lines with a few nautical touches surround me in everyday life, and I wanted my office to resemble my familiarity and love for the bayside lifestyle!

  • Tell us about who you worked with to execute your vision.
The amazing Courtney Hardie of Hardie Design took my crazy ideas and turned them into a tangible creation. She combined my coastal color palette with pops of gold and incorporated a mix of modern and classic design to create a space that was both professionally and personally appealing!

  • Do you have any advice for photographers just starting out who are interested in a similar career?
Learn your camera inside and out, know that practice makes perfect and find a positive community of photographers who are willing to help you! I wouldn’t be where I am today without the incredible group of photographers and wedding industry professionals that believed in me from a very young age. And I hope all newcomers find the same warm welcome that I did when I got started!

  • How do you stay organized in both your job and office?
I’m a little bit of an old-school girl! I love my paper calendar and Post-it notes! (I know, I know…). Having things physically written down seems to keep me extremely grounded! I’ve also found that I work best with a lot of natural light because a well-lit space gives me a clear mind to make things happen!

  • Where are some of your favorite places to eat, drink, shop and visit in Annapolis?
To avoid writing a five-page response to this question, I’ll keep it short and sweet. For dinner + drinks, I highly recommend Crush Wine Bar, Metropolitan (a Kevin Spacey favorite!), Level, or Vin909. I highly recommend getting your hair styled at Liu Liu Salon in Eastport before shopping downtown at Hobo International, Lilac Bijoux and Brown Eyed Girl!

  • Where are some of your favorite places to shop for housewares + nautical décor?
Most of my pieces were budget finds from Joss & Main, HomeGoods, Pier 1 and quite a few local stores in Annapolis and Cape Saint Claire! The antique cameras were all pieces that I’ve had either in my family or in my personal collection, and I am really excited to finally have a place to display them!

  • How do you sparkle?
By making others shine in front of the camera! I sparkle most when I know that I’m helping other people feel beautiful, intelligent and ready to conquer the world, especially after taking their portrait!
