Make-Up Bag Spill: Seventeen Magazine Beauty Assistant Jillian Ruffo

Jillian Ruffo may have started as Seventeen‘s beauty assistant last August, but there’s no doubt that this 23-year-old was born with beauty in her blood. With both parents in the beauty industry—her dad is a hairstylist and her mom is a makeup artist—Jillian began garnering knowledge of all things beauty from day one. After interning at Allure and then Fitness, she landed her dream job at Seventeen just a few months after graduation. Now her world consists of #ManicureMondays, super-fun photoshoots and the opportunity to test all the newest and coolest beauty products on the market—talk about the good life! Needless to say, we were elated when we had the chance to chat with Jillian about all the products that currently hold a solid space in her make-up bag. Considering her insider access, it’s safe to say these picks are the cream of the beauty crop. Click through to get the scoop on all of Jillian’s current beauty must-haves—and don’t be surprised if you’re itching to head to Sephora afterwards. We know we are!

1. Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara ($23): “This is AMAZING—it has a really big brush and separates all of your lashes really well. I wear a ton of mascara, so I also love that it layers on top of itself or even other mascaras really perfectly. It’s great for the end-of-the-day touch-ups.”
2. Bite Beauty High Pigment Pencil in Violet ($24): “I’ve been into light purple lipsticks lately, and this is one of my faves. I’ve found that some purples lose their color and change to the base color, so you have to reapply a lot—but this pigment stays true for a long time.”
3. NARS Illuminator in Copacabana ($30): “This speaks for itself—every NARS illuminator is amazing. I like a lighter tone, so it just adds a sheer glow.”
4. Clinique ‘All About Shadow’ 8-Pan Palette ($36): “I have hazel eyes, so I like using reddish/copper shadows to bring out the green.”
5. Clé de Peau Beauté Refining Fluid Foundation SPF 24 ($120): “It’s really lightweight—I hate thick foundations that don’t spread well. I just use a tiny bit of this over my sunscreen wherever I have redness, like on my cheeks and t-zone.”
6. Make Up For Ever Aqua Lip Waterproof Lipliner Pencil in 3c ($19): “This is my overall favorite product right now. The color is a few shades darker than my skin tone—it’s this cool ’90s brownish-pink nude. It goes on matte, so your lips just look fuller and really pouty. I’m obsessed with it. I read that the Olsen twins wear it, so obvi I had to try it. I like to think it makes every makeup look seem a lot more glamorous.”
7. Jurlique Skin Balancing Face Oil ($50): “It’s a really hydrating oil, but it absorbs really quickly so I don’t feel too greasy. And it smells really pretty.”
8. Maybelline Eye Studio Master Precise Ink Pen ($7.99): “This is the only liner I use. It’s literally like using a sharpie on your eyes. It’s so easy to apply and it lasts all day.”
9. Tom Ford Brow Sculptor ($42): “Super easy application, and the brown shade is perfect for my brows.”
10. Lorac PRO Palette ($42): “I love it. It has every color you could possibly need.”
11. NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl ($25): “It’s the perfect red and it stays on all day.”
12. Dr. Hauschka Lip Balm ($16.95): “It smells like you’re at a spa, so I put it on when I’m stressed.”

Growing up in a household run by a hairstylist and makeup artist must have been amazing! I can imagine that there were just endless beauty products to have fun testing out. Love the picks you’ve put together here and excited to give the Nars lip pencil a try. I’m always looking for good reds!
