For Alicia Caldecott and her team at A Day in May Events (a wedding planning and design company located in Traverse City, Michigan), each day brings new projects, challenges and triumphs. Since its inception, A Day In May — named after Alicia’s own May wedding — has produced a variety of events that range from intimate social gatherings to lavish celebrations. Their desire to provide clients with exceptional customer service, an unsurpassed attention to detail and a unique design aesthetic is at the heart of everything they do. The ever-growing team (including our own editorial intern Carly!) is constantly working to develop swoon-worthy destination weddings in cities across the country. Alicia gave us a tour of A Day in May’s cheerful home office and shared some insider input!
How did you decide to begin an event-planning business?
I was the Assistant Golf Professional and Membership Services Director here at a private golf club in Northern Michigan prior to the market crash in 2007. When things started to turn sour, the club shut down quickly. It was a huge door slamming shut before my eyes.
At the club, I was planning group activities as well as weddings, and when the club closed, those clients still needed services. I started to help them plan their weddings directly rather than through the club. One door closed but a huge window opened for me. What I loved about the club is that everyone who walked through the door was treated with the highest level of service — and our members treated us with dignity and mutual respect. When I started A Day in May Events, I wanted to embody the private club life of the luxury service industry by treating clients to exceptional experiences and service, while also yielding a level of comfort and familiarity.
