Style At Home: Danielle Hardy's Nursery

Danielle Hardy is no stranger to seriously stylish décor — after all, she does own the über-chic wall decal company Urbanwalls — so the opportunity to see her daugher’s beautifully cultivated nursery is an absolute treat. Danielle has created a truly one-of-a-kind space for her Little Gem, Isla. The nursery is perfect for this period in Isla’s life — and we especially love how it’s designed to grow with her. Read on to learn more about Danielle, Isla and the special blanket that inspired her whole room!

  • What was your inspiration for the nursery design?
I had a blanket that my mom made me when I was a baby. On one side it was all patchwork, and the other side had these beautiful pink, coral and yellow flowers. My mom passed away from cancer when I was 15, so when I found out that I was having a girl, I knew that I wanted to incorporate that blanket into the design of her room. With the help of designer Stephanie Jean, it soon became the focal point and premise of the room’s design.

  • How do you balance work with family?
I wish I had a perfect answer for this, but it’s definitely a journey — and one that changes constantly. Some days I feel like I did it well, and then the next day I fall on my face. Thankfully I live by the mantra, “Tomorrow is a new day.” I am determined that the kids will always come first.

There was a season where I tried to squeeze in work and kids at the same time, and it didn’t take me long to realize that kids don’t understand deadlines. Those days where I “needed” to get work done would be the same ones that somebody was teething or up all night with the flu. I came to the conclusion that I needed to be present with the kids — and then my work day started when they went to sleep for the night. It made for many late nights and early mornings, but I didn’t want them to constantly feel like I was frustrated or unavailable to them. I figure, I do the best that I can do and that is all I can do. It will all work out, and tomorrow is a new day.

  • “I knew that I wanted pinks and corals, because after two boys I was so excited to have a sweet baby girl. My heart was set on a boho, shabby chic Anthropologie-style room with elements of the outdoors. However, putting it all together in a classy, cohesive way was going to be a challenge. That’s what I loved about Stephanie. She was able to articulate my thoughts and take a little old blanket and some random ideas, and put it all together to make a beautiful room that means the world to me.”

  • Tell us more about the two feature walls: the paper flowers and the “I will love you…always and forever.”
Both were a labor of love. As owners of Urbanwalls, a wall decal company, we knew that we wanted to incorporate our decals in the room. From the moment I found out I was pregnant, I felt a love that was going to be with me always and forever. It was a mantra that I wanted Isla to grow up knowing and seeing on a daily basis. I found a font that I liked and made it into a repeating decal that read the same line over and over. I spaced and alternated the words so that each line was a bit mismatched.

The flowers were equally special because they were a way of bringing my mom’s blanket to life. It’s pretty obvious that as a newborn, Isla didn’t have a massive appreciation for the design of the room, but seeing as she was never going to know her grandma, this was a way that I could incorporate her grandma’s presence into the room. It makes me so happy when I walk in there. It’s so bright and cheery.

  • What has been the best part about being a mom so far?
Isla is my third baby. I have two boys, Mattias (7) and Maxim (5), so our home is busy. Being a mom started out as a bit of a shock that nobody could prepare me for. My life was suddenly ruled by this little being that needed me in almost every way. Through the years I have learned so much and become so much happier and content with my role as a mom. I am so thankful for these kids and that I was chosen to be their mom. They got me out of myself and filled me with so much joy. They are work…so much work…but hands-down the best kind of work. Their little smiles and personalities are just the best, and I LOVE making memories with them and the life that we are creating together.

  • What was the biggest challenge in designing the room?
The fact that the room is quite small was a bit of a challenge. It didn’t take much for it to feel full. We had to err on the side of incorporating less stuff in order to avoid a cluttered feel.

  • Can you give one piece of advice for new moms decorating a nursery?
Put pieces of yourself into it. If there is something that is important to you, use it. You don’t need to spend tons of money and you don’t need to have a massive room. It doesn’t have to be super “baby”-esque. Make it a room that they can grow up in — one that you can add to as they develop their own likes and wants.

  • What is your favorite part of the room?
It’s a toss-up between the wall decals and the paper flowers.

  • How did you make those beautiful paper flowers?
I saw these flowers as a photo wall at a women’s conference the year before I had Isla, and I was so smitten with them. They gave off this awesome Anthropologie vibe that I love. As soon as I found out I was having a girl, I knew those had to be part of the room. Thankfully, my designer was the same person who made that huge flower wall — so a couple of us girls got together with colored tissue paper, moss and a glue gun and got our DIY on!

  • Anything else you want to share about the nursery or being a mom?
With my first baby, I was always eager for the next season. When is he going to sleep through the night? When is he going to walk? I have learned through the years to just enjoy each period. We are having so much fun with Isla. She honestly completes our family and we have enjoyed every moment…even the nights. I just look at them all and appreciate where we are in this moment, because these kids just grow so darn fast!

  • How do you sparkle?
I sparkle when I am content with where I am and what I have. It’s so easy to get caught up with the next thing and the chaos of daily life, but when I truly take time to stop and enjoy the moments of my son running up to me with a dandelion that he proudly picked, or my baby girl burying her head in my chest for a cuddle, I am complete. Having an “I get to” attitude goes a long way.

    • Danielle

Thank you Tina :) It’s the cutest deer. One side is awake and the other side sleeps. I always put it on the sleepy side to give Isla a little encouragement 😉 haha
