We admit: the thought of spreading oil all over your skin is a strange one. But whether you have a dry or oily complexion, oil cleansing is an all-natural regimen that’s worth a try! The basic concept is that like dissolves like — so this method dissolves the nasty oil that’s creating acne or infuses dry skin with much-needed moisture. Healthy glow, here we come!
STEP ONE: Prep your oils.
This depends entirely upon your skin type. We’d typically recommend olive and castor oil. The more dry your skin is, the less castor oil you’ll want to use, since — believe it or not — it’s more drying than olive oil! For oily skin, try 70% olive oil and 30% castor oil. For normal skin, an 80/20 ratio is more ideal. And for dry skin, start with 90% olive oil and 10% castor oil. Ultimately, it’s all trial and error — so feel free to adjust as needed.
STEP TWO: Massage oil onto your face.
Unless you’re wearing super heavy makeup, there’s no need to remove it (even waterproof mascara) before cleansing. That’s the power of oil! Start with about a quarter-sized amount of oil in your palm and warm it up a bit by rubbing your hands together. Massage onto your face, focusing especially on areas that are prone to breakouts or blemishes. Massage for a minute or two — and relax! Pretend you’re at the spa getting a facial.
STEP THREE: Steam it.
Soak a facial cloth with hot (but not scalding!) water, and wring it out so it’s not dripping. Hold it up to your face to steam out the oils. Repeat two or three times. When you’re finished, very gently wipe your face (without scrubbing!).
STEP FOUR: Moisturize (only if necessary).
Depending on your skin type, you may not need to moisturize after cleansing. If your skin is still thirsty, though, go ahead and use a tiny bit of the oil mix (or another favorite face oil, like Argan oil!).
