How To: Go From Beach Day to Date Night

We’ve been singing the praises of maxi dresses all summer long, but there’s also something to be said for cute separates and how well they work when transitioning between looks! Our ideal summer uniform consists of breathable, lightweight basics we can mix and match and dress up or down. With the help of some great summer staples from Old Navy, our Social Media Director Abby went from a day of beach fun in the sun to date night in a snap! Read on to see how she did it.

  • We love wearing a simple cotton tunic for the beach. It’s comfortable and durable — and it won’t clash with your bathing suit and other beach accessories (like this colorful straw tote!).

  • Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day and reapply sunscreen so that you’re not dehydrated or sunburned for date night!

  • Don’t worry about wearing much makeup at the beach — it will most likely smear and sweat off anyway! With cute beach accessories and a tinted lip balm, you’re bound to look cute in all your photos.

  • Abby was able to fit these comfortable drapey pants, heels and a clutch with her jewelry and some makeup in her tote bag so that she could go right from the beach to her date!

  • Simple gold jewelry — like hoops and a classic cuff — is an easy way to dress up an outfit. Abby applied concealer and a little highlighter on her cheekbones and eyelids, then added a liquid liner, a few swipes of mascara and lip gloss!

Hair Tip: If you head into the ocean, loosely braid your hair afterward for real beach waves later in the evening. Or, if you prefer, bring along a travel bottle of texturizing spray. Braids are also a great way to disguise any unruly pieces of hair in a flash, as Abby did with a few pieces of her bangs!

  • A little box clutch is all you need for the essentials.

  • These insanely comfortable drapey pants are perfect for when the sun goes down and the temperature drops. Stick to shoes that are easy to walk in to maintain maximum relaxation! Abby chose a stacked heel, but wedges or cute flats are also great options!

Anyone know where those heels are from???

    • Abigail

Hi Chloe! They’re Forever21 but unfortunately not in stock anymore! Thanks for reading!

    • Chelsey

Pretty sure they’re from Forever 21, I have them or at least a very similar pair!

Old navy is great for light, cotton, summery maxi dresses and colourful totes. I found a great jean jacket there for $15 that I always throw over a maxi dress.
