Shop Talk: Sugar & Cloth

What began as a sort of personal scrapbook for Ashley Rose to share with faraway family and friends has flourished into a full-on blogging business — and goodness, are we sure glad it did! Sugar & Cloth is an ever-inspiring space, so it’s no surprise that Ashley’s accompanying workspace is a total dream. Shots of her gorgeously whitewashed studio couldn’t have come at a more opportune time as we head into September: the ultimate month of fresh starts! We’re head-over-heels — and we know you’ll be, too.

  • What’s the best part of working in a creative industry?

There’s almost always something new going on, which I love! I always have the wheels turning for a new project idea or concept, so there’s never any time to get bored with things. I’m super thankful for that considering I inherited my dad’s inability to sit still for long.

  • What sparked your interest in starting Sugar & Cloth?

I actually started Sugar & Cloth after a cross-country move to Houston, away from all of my friends and family. Initially I was just blogging to share projects and desserts I was making around the house as a way to share things back home, but it wasn’t until a few months later that I started looking at it as a potential business. I’m so glad I did, though!

  • How has starting your blog changed your career path?

It has genuinely opened up so many doors I never thought possible. When I started blogging, I was working as a waitress at a local seafood restaurant just to have money coming in because I really had no idea what I wanted to do — or where to begin. After a few months of starting Sugar & Cloth, I got my first opportunity to work with Martha Stewart Living for a holiday campaign, and I thought I had died and gone to heaven! Fast-forward three years of DIY-ing and blogging from my living room, and I’m finally taking the next step to further my business with a studio and workshop space. If someone would’ve told me this is what I would be doing when I was waiting tables with no sure career direction, I would’ve never believed them!

  • What were your goals when designing and decorating your office?

I wanted the space to feel complete but still be somewhat of a blank slate for whatever projects or styled shoots we may be working on. I also wanted it to match the Sugar & Cloth aesthetic, so I kept everything bright and white with just touches of color here and there for everyday interest.

  • “This is one of my favorite DIY projects of the summer, a DIY Ikea hack cart that I used for an ice cream styled shoot, along with the DIY canisters to match!”

  • What is a typical work day for you?

I wish I could really impress you guys with a regimented daily routine like a lot of my mentor business ladies, but I’m still figuring this one out! There’s really no set schedule for my work days since a lot depends on what’s going on in our editorial schedule or contributor projects. But every day always starts with coffee and checking on posts to make sure I’m keeping up with interactions as best as possible. Then comes a quick email check. Other than that, it can range anywhere from shooting DIYs, sourcing products for upcoming ideas or scheming up cocktail recipes for workshops.

  • What has been the most rewarding surprise for you with Sugar & Cloth?

The fact that I get the opportunity to call Sugar & Cloth my job at all. I can honestly say that if I had all of the money I would ever need, I would still want to do Sugar & Cloth every day. I never thought I would have a job that I would be as excited about as I am this one, as stressful as it can be sometimes.

“What office doesn’t need a daily reminder to stay a little wild?!”

  • Do you have a favorite part of your office?

I think it’s a tie between my dream mint green Smeg refrigerator and the sofa area! Clearly my priorities here are snacking and cat naps, haha.

  • What is your advice for those looking to break into the blogging scene?

Don’t underestimate the amount of work it will take to continually provide original content — and definitely make friends in the industry. I’m pretty sure I text Brittni, Lexy and Kelly on the daily for advice about something!

  • How do you sparkle?

I sparkle by always trying to remain hopeful and humble…and with a little pop of gold

  • Jillian

Gorgeous space! I’ve been looking for prints like the “Things are about to get really good” and “Let’s do this” hanging in their studio. Do you know where I can find them?

    • http://www.sugarandcloth.com Ashley Rose | Sugar & Cloth

Hi Jillian! I actually designed and painted them, but they were laser cut by Post Studio Projects here in Houston!

      • Jillian

Oh my word, they are beautiful! Well done. You should go into business ;)

  • Sharon Garofalow

I love those DIY canisters! Where can I find the DIY link for it? They look like they’d be perfect for my tea tin idea that I’d like to execute sometime soon (so much tea, so little time!). Also, truly love how they creatively utilized the drawers as the foundation for holding the desk top. I have a small work space and would love to incorporate that idea to upgrade my work space and add more organization and storage solutions!
