From where did your passion for design stem? Did you always know you wanted to be a designer?
My mother is such a creative woman that when my sisters and I were young and looking at knickknacks we wanted to buy, her response was, “You can make that”—and more often than not, we would. So in college, I knew I wanted my career to include creativity, but at the time there was a lack of awareness about the possibilities and range of options that industries provided. I have a very business-centered mind but I need the creative process as well, so it seemed like being a buyer in the fashion industry would be the best fit. Five years after awesome experiences in merchandising and product development at Macy’s and Henri Bendel—and then going back to school at Parsons School of Design in New York for marketing—I found I didn’t enjoy the fast cyclical nature of fashion. I turned to home design, as it offers more permanence that one can enjoy every day.
I started off by assisting Caitlin Wilson of Caitlin Wilson Design (who was such an amazing mentor) in launching her line of textiles. I worked as a buyer in home décor for One Kings Lane (a company that’s really doing mind-blowing things for the world of home décor and social media), and then set off on my own with my interior design firm, which has most recently launched a line of hand-painted brushstroke lamps.
