Winter can be rough no matter where you live, but there’s nothing quite like a Northern Michigan winter! Alicia Caldecott—owner of A Day In May Events in Traverse City, Michigan—can totally attest to that. Alicia is sharing with us the survival activities and items that keep her body moving and her spirits high come winter.
Favorite winter activity: “We have 46 acres at our house, and nothing is quite like a hike (or stroll, depending on the trail you want to take) through our very own winter wonderland. We take the golden retrievers out with us, and they love running around. (I love these Mountain Safety Research Snowshoes.) It’s such a great family activity.
Favorite places to enjoy the outdoors during the winter: “Living in Northern Michigan, we are surrounded by some of the Midwest’s best ski slopes. I grew up on the slopes, skiing after school and getting addicted to the rush of adrenaline and thrill of a great ride. It’s a wonderful way to stay in shape while still having fun!”
Favorite way to brighten a space: “Spoil yourself with fresh-cut flowers! In the winter there are beautiful varieties of florals on the market, and nothing lifts a mood better than a bouquet of blooms.”
Favorite way to escape the cold: “I am a professional event planner; therefore, planning is second nature. But in the winter, we try to squeeze in a trip to somewhere sunny—it’s usually totally spontaneous and unplanned! If we have a free weekend coming, we’ve been known to book a trip to Mexico on a Wednesday and be on a beach by that Friday!”

“You can never have enough jackets! My husband laughs because I have a coat closet all to myself. From Patagonia to Burberry to Gore-Tex—you name it, I have it. With deep pockets, a fleece-lined interior and a detachable hood, this Mountain Hardwear Downtown Down Coat ($300) is a favorite of mine.”
