These days, the shelves are saturated with tons of hit-or-miss products—but which ones actually deliver? Do they work well? Are they all as amazing as their advertisements suggest? Enter: our newest series, “Beauty Breakdown,” where members of our team will share in-depth personal experiences with such items. First up, Rikki Ciminsky tests out a setting spray!
“Shopping for beauty products is a lot like choosing a cupcake flavor. No, you won’t be smearing icing on your face—but hear me out! In both cases, the entire selection always looks so amazing, but I never know if it’ll be good until I actually dig in.”
Urban Decay’s De-Slick Oil-Control Makeup Setting Spray ($14–$30, Sephora)
“Mist on this weightless spray to control oil, deflect surface shine and help makeup stay put.” – Urban Decay
MY POINT OF VIEW:
“A setting spray is one of those products that tends to prompt cynicism. (‘Is it really necessary?’) But after using up Urban Decay’s De-Slick Oil-Control Makeup Setting Spray, let me tell you: it’s totally worth it—especially if you have oily skin.
It makes your makeup stick.
Skin is naturally on the warmer side, which is why makeup can melt off throughout the day. Urban Decay partnered with SKINDINÄVIA to develop “patented Temperature Control Technology.” That sounds very science-y, but it means that your makeup won’t be as easily affected by internal or external heat! Call me crazy, but when I spray the product on, I actually feel my makeup fuse to my skin—without any added stickiness or shine!
It actually controls oil.
I have ‘combination’ skin—my T-zone is oily, and everything else is dry. I’m a dance teacher, and after an evening of teaching (a.k.a. exercising for about five hours!), my makeup remains impressively matte. For me, that’s a win in and of itself.
It disguises excessive powder.
Confession: I can be pretty heavy-handed when applying my face powder. I’m not the only one, right? I know it’s a bad habit—but Urban Decay must’ve known it, too, because I’m pretty sure the brand invented this product for people like us! If you notice that your face looks a bit cakey or flaky after you apply powder, employ this spray! It’ll add radiance right back into your skin.
MY PARTING WORDS:
I like to spray this product on my face after applying my moisturizer, and then once again after applying my makeup to lock everything in place. Urban Decay’s setting spray definitely lives up to its claim . . . I’m sticking to this product, just like it sticks to me!”
