While most of us only dream about living in picture-perfect Hawaii, Lauren Brenner has made this tropical oasis her home. A New York City transplant, Lauren easily reworked her city lifestyle to suit her new Honolulu locale. We were thrilled to follow the beachy blonde around town to get the scoop on leading a sun and sand-filled life! Read on for Lauren’s must-try eateries, island-appropriate beauty routine and suggestions for the perfect Hawaiian day.
Must-visit locations in the Kaka’ako neighborhood:
- Paiko Hawaii: A DIY succulent bar and eclectic flower shop. Lauren actually made a DIY succulent arrangement. They also have gorgeous air plants.
- Brue Bar: A trendy coffee shop not far from Paiko that brews a mean espresso! This is the perfect spot to grab your morning caffeine fix or relax with a friend!
- Cocina Taqueria: Right in the heart of Kaka’ako, this delicious Mexican restaurant smelled so heavenly that we nearly ordered lunch at 9 a.m.! We loved the outside tables and the bright blue accents.
- Murals and street art of Kaka’ako: Artists are commissioned to decorate the exterior walls in the area. Works range from tropical scenes to more deep and meaningful pieces that reflect the urban culture of Honolulu. You could get lost wandering around all of the beautiful pieces.

How did your B.A. in Leadership and Organizational Studies and Communications help get you to where you are today? What are you working on now?
My leadership classes in college were so beneficial to learning how to work with others—not only in a business environment, but also in life. It’s important to recognize that everyone has different learning and working styles. If you have a team of only one personality and working style, you’re not maximizing the benefits of everyone’s strengths and weaknesses. Some people are more innovative, some are more practical. It’s crucial to balance your team with a variety of people, not just carbon copies.
Right now I’m creating my own line for the beachy girl who wants to live in her favorite T-shirt—wearing it to bed or to the beach, or pairing it with a leather mini for happy hour. It’s that go-to in your closet—the fail-safe that you want to order multiples of, just in case. From my leadership studies, I learned how to build my team: the visionary/creative, the graphic talent, the production and the overall bottom line, the operator. I need every piece of the puzzle in order for the project to go smoothly.
I’m also back blogging, which is one of my favorite creative outlets. I’ve always loved writing and I’m a sharer. I will talk to anyone who will listen about my favorite concealer, hike or that must-try shave ice spot. It’s been fun exploring Oahu and sharing it with my readers, who are used to seeing me in New York City. Island life feels more authentic to me, so it’s been great to share again.
