Scroll through the collections and goodies offered by e-commerce site Ruche Inc., and you’ll find a lot of flirty silhouettes and pleasant pastel colors. On the opposite end, try hopping over to its sister site ThreadSence, where you’re bound to notice a definitive shift towards clothing and accessories that have a distinctly bohemian (and decidedly dreamy!) vibe. Both shops rock strong style and we’d be hard-pressed to choose a favorite!
You might be surprised then to find out that both brands originated with the help of one person: Mai Olivo. As the founder of Ruche Inc. and co-founder of ThreadSence—not to mention a wife and mother—Mai has a packed schedule. Today, she’s taking a break to share with us the story behind her love for fashion, plus her strategies for getting it all done. One thing’s for sure: Mai was born for creative business! Read on for this tastemaker’s tale.

Tell us about your progression from computer science major to the founder of two businesses. How did you make the leap from the technology world to something more creative?
I’ve always had a dream to own my own business one day. I grew up loving all sorts of arts and crafts. As much as I enjoyed computer programming, I wanted something a bit more creative. I had to work my day job, but any spare time went into finding what I really enjoyed doing. I started selling things on eBay and strolling through malls with my husband, Josh, to see what else I could sell. I saw a need for Ruche—there wasn’t a store online that had the Ruche aesthetic, so I made it.
