Let’s face it—many of us have already traded in our math textbooks and backpacks for packed appointment calendars and designer briefcases. But despite the fact that graduation may have come and gone, the back-to-school season still brings with it the motivation to tidy and organize our offices and desk spaces. To channel our energy toward attaining a super productive workspace, Mandy Kellogg Rye of Waiting On Martha blog and shop is here to share her post-grad tips for mastering a stylish and sleek desktop. Start with simple pieces.
“I love infusing rooms with bright, bold colors, but I also know that six months from now, I’ll have a new color crush! To allow for future flexibility, ease of design and to anchor your space, start with clean, simple furniture. In my office, I used a white and chrome lacquer desk, white chairs and a white faux shearling rug as my base, and then I added pops of color and patterns with a lamp, ottoman and pillows.”
Be strategic when mixing patterns.
“I’m all about embracing the mix, whether it be patterns, textures or colors. But when you’re working with multiple patterns, you have to be strategic. To avoid overdoing it in your space, start with a hero pattern and build around it. In my office, I started with the Thibaut Tanzania wallpaper and chose other patterns—like the bright leopard print in the ottoman—to complement it. When picking accent patterns, it’s best to work within your existing color palette, but don’t be afraid to try something new.”
Create a place for guests.
“It’s always awkward when you visit someone in their office and there’s nowhere to sit. Though the main purpose of the office will always be meet your needs, be sure to keep your guests in mind, too. In order to create a place for them, design a functional seating area. In my office, I prefer having my guests sit opposite my desk. To up the ante, I use an accent table as a place to set coffee or cocktails. This allows conversation and creativity to flow easily!”
Keep your desk clean and orderly.
“There’s nothing worse than a messy, chaotic workspace! To keep your desk tidy and organized, display only the necessities. I keep my pens and pencils in a unique holder for easy access, with my trusty stapler and tape dispenser nearby. A small desk calendar keeps me on track. And because I’m a sucker for fresh flowers, there’s always a spot for them on my desk! Keep your most used items front and center, but remember to save room to work.”
