It’s no secret that when it comes to decorating for any type of season, holiday or occasion, Target is one of our go-to destinations. And as for the designer we love to follow for inspiration? Emily Henderson consistently tops the list! So, with transitional fall photos beginning to show up throughout our social media feeds, we’ve set our sights on making that all-too-familiar seasonal shift in our own spaces for autumn 2015.
We had the chance to chat exclusively with Emily about the brand new line of fall goodies hitting Target stores nationwide, and can’t help but think that you’ll be just as giddy as we were upon catching sight of the line. Between the sophisticated plaid textiles, gold finishes and marble elements, this year’s collection truly has a little something for everyone. Emily’s advice on autumnal decorating and making the most of this tradition-heavy season is below — and you can check out Emily’s tips on how to create a cozy retreat this fall with this fun video here.
Describe the fall collection in three words.
Target’s Threshold fall 2015 collection is elevated, cozy with a touch of whimsy. Oh, and super versatile and modern. That’s technically five but listen, editing was never really my thing.
What are your three favorite unexpected decorating items that our readers can find at Target?
Copper lanterns, wicker heads and marble. Target’s Threshold fall lamp assortment is so stunning and includes a lot of marble—which is new for fall—and looks incredible paired with the mixed metals.
When it comes to creating a cozy fall tone at home, what are some of your go-to tricks and styling elements?
Layering various textures (like wools, chunky knits in nostalgic patterns—hello, plaid) is such a great way to create a fall tone. Just layer, layer, layer and make sure you include some warmer tones (beiges, taupes and even browns are back this year) to make your home feel inviting. New textiles are always the perfect affordable way to transform any area of your space.
For those of us who aren’t so keen on switching out our décor with every change of the season, what are your suggestions for minimal updates that afford maximum impact?
Invest in a strong piece—which could be anything from a sofa or dresser to a piece of art. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but it has to be a statement piece that you love and can live with all year round. Once you have that foundation, you can change it seasonally with minimal tweaks, such as tossing a chunky knit throw over your sofa or rearranging tchotchkes on your dresser that bring in a warm autumnal color palette (like beautiful maroons and oranges).
What are your favorite resources for autumn décor? Name your top three places in LA!
Well, there is a reason I’m their spokesperson—Target’s fall collection is so strong. It just has tons of mixed metal, marble, cozy faux fur and lots of plaid (which always remind me of my Oregon roots). I mix those pieces with finds from vintage places like Lost and Found, Inheritance and ShopClass.
What are you most looking forward to with fall’s arrival? And conversely, what are you sad to see slip away with the end of summer?
I’m looking forward to the arrival of my baby girl! And while the birth is something that I can live without, the idea of hunkering down and cuddling for two months while I’m on “maternity leave” sounds amazing. I put that in quotes because, as a business owner, I’m so lucky that life is flexible, but I think I’ll probably be back at it in a few days. Oh, and the launch of my first book, Styled (which is on pre-order by the way, no pressure!). I’m going to be busy promoting, talking and pretty much convincing every single person I meet—even perfect strangers—to buy it. We redid our patio a while ago and loved spending all summer out there, so I’ll miss that once summer is gone. Though, let’s be real—living in LA means we’ll hopefully be able to use it through the fall! I’ll miss summer vacation—we recently got back from a couple of weeks in Spain—but I’m looking forward to the hustle and bustle with fall and the holidays right around the corner!
What are your favorite fall traditions?
In a lot of ways, this is the first year that I feel like we’ll have a kid and not just a baby that watches the traditions. And I have a feeling I’ll be getting very into all the crafts associated with every season and holiday from now on. When it’s just you and your partner, you might decorate pumpkins while drinking cocktails, but now that we have a toddler, I’m just so excited to actually do the project with him. So it’s on. The holiday season is going to be filled with tradition, whether he notices or not! You can watch it all unfold on the blog, don’t worry. I’m holding nothing back these days.
