As ladies who love adventure, one of our favorite things to do is to take a weekend road trip. Not only is it a great way to explore new places, find hidden gems and enjoy beautiful scenery, but it’s a fun way to spend time with a friend, family member or significant other. To squeeze in one last trip before fall’s arrival, we took a mini road trip down the beautiful California Pacific Highway with our trusty travel companion, the Plenti card. With its plenti-ful rewards benefits (pun intended), it was a no-brainer to use the card for our road trip accessories, many gas refills, snacks and hotel bookings! Today, we’re sharing our tips and tricks for a safe and fun road trip.
When deciding what to wear in the car and what to pack in preparation for a road trip, comfort is always a huge factor. We’re fans of denim cut-offs, a breathable T-shirt or button-down and some sneakers. Simple accessories like a fedora and cute pair of sunglasses add classic style to the look, all the while keeping your eyes and face protected from the sun and any glare you experience while driving.
For a weekend road trip, we always try to pack light (the key word being “try”) and stick to bringing pajamas, a light sweater, a pair of jeans and two tops. Then, we’ll pack a pair of cute sandals to change into and a smaller clutch or cross body bag to take with us for an evening of dinner and exploration. When traveling, we like to be comfortable but put together, and ultimately stick to classic, easy-to-wear pieces! We used our Plenti card at Macy’s to stock up on a few travel wardrobe essentials, like the lightweight plaid shirt and denim shorts below that can also be worn into fall.
On long road trips, it’s important to stay hydrated and keep snacks on-hand in case you can’t find a place to pull over for food. Before heading out on our road trip, we made sure to stop at Rite Aid with our Plenti card in hand to pick up a case of water bottles, some pretzels and almonds for easy and (relatively) healthy snacking! We also picked up a car phone charger, some hand sanitizer, tissues and band aids to keep in the car. To explore unique cafés and restaurants along our route, we turn to Roadfood.com , TV Food Maps and Open Table!
No matter how far we are going on a road trip, we always make sure our gas tank is completely full before heading out. Gas fill-ups are extra fun at Exxon or Mobile since we know that we reap the rewards every time we swipe our Plenti card! Looking for another pro road trip tip? We like to use the GasBuddy app to make sure we always know where the nearest gas stations are! Another great app is Sitorsquat, which lets you know where the nearest bathrooms are. Hey, when you gotta go, you gotta go!
Whether you’re planning your overnight accommodations before you head out on your trip or you plan to find one on-the-go, we always want to find the best deal. We have the Hotel Tonight and Hotels By Me apps downloaded to our phones so we can find a hotel in our price range and near our location easily. When booking the hotel prior to the trip, we can rack up points via the Online Marketplace with deals at hotels.com, hotwire.com and orbitz.com! And in case we’re looking to go all out by hitting the road with a new-to-us set of wheels, we recently found out that we can also rake in the points every time we rent a car from National, Alamo and Enterprise. Convertible, anyone?
While we are huge fans of simply enjoying the scenery on our road trips, it’s always nice to have a great playlist going or to play some games if we get bored. We love playing our road trip playlist on our Spotify app and playing classic car games like I Spy, 20 Questions or the license plate game. If you want to listen to books on tape, the Audible app is great for that, too.
Of course, we also love to take lots of pictures on our road trips. We tend to snap a lot on our phones, but we always make sure to bring a real camera to capture the scenery on our adventures—plus we can earn rewards by printing them out at Rite Aid’s photo station. If you are posting pictures on your phone, share them with friends and family through the Postagram app.
Above all, our ultimate piece of road tripping advice is to relax and have fun! Live in the moment and enjoy the adventure. Thanks to all the points we racked up on our summer road trip, we’re ready to take another one this fall. Where should we go? All suggestions are welcome!
