As the Digital Managing Editor of NewBeauty magazine, Carolyn Hsu has the enviable opportunity to be immersed in the makeup and skincare world—a realm that has always held her fascination with an ironclad grip. Her day subsequently revolves around overseeing the beauty and health content published to the site and its social media outlets, plus thorough research of new products, discoveries and trends. Are you jealous yet? Just wait.
Though Carolyn’s career has evolved into the beauty realm, it didn’t get its start there. Instead, this editor began at a little tech company many of you may have heard of called Microsoft. Beauty, though, was always front and center in Carolyn’s mind—even then. So, together with a friend, she launched The Daily Obsession, a blog that offered the pair a platform from which to spout off on their (you guessed it) latest obsessions. “I found that I naturally gravitated toward beauty—especially makeup and skincare,” Carolyn reminisced. “The only thing I found more satisfying than finding a really great product was writing about and sharing that discovery.”
Fast-forward to today, and Carolyn’s latest ‘daily obsession’ is her role at NewBeauty. Now, cutting-edge discoveries within the niche drive Carolyn’s purpose in life, and she has the daydream-like pleasure of sharing the trends with her audience of more than six million. Witnessing the real-time reader reaction has proven to be the ultimate form of validation for this passionate and driven beauty insider. Below, Carolyn dives down deep into the products and processes that bring order and pleasure to her own daily beauty routine.
“My current foundation of choice is Glossier Perfecting Skin Tint. It gives me enough color and coverage so I feel put together, but never like I’m wearing a mask. I love that it has a youthful, smooth and dewy finish and makes it look like I have great skin—not, you know, great foundation. I’m also currently using Tata Harper Repairative Moisturizer. I try a lot of creams and it’s rare that I actually go through an entire bottle of anything, but I went through this entire bottle and am already halfway through a second. I like the silky feel and the all-day hydration, but I love the scent. I usually don’t like fragrance in my skincare products at all, but something about that herbal-floral fragrance just makes me feel equal parts relaxed and rejuvenated. The other moisturizer that I love and have used to the end is Kiehl’s Skin Rescuer. The texture is incredible and my skin feels (and looks) so happy when I use it. I love everything about that product.”
“I don’t apply body moisturizer regularly, but when I do, I always reach for Sunday Riley Disrobe Body Lotion. I love that it has lactic acid to exfoliate, so my skin doesn’t just feel hydrated, it really is smoother. It also has this fruity, candy scent that’s sweet, but in a nostalgic way that I really like. As for face washes, I alternate between three: SkinCeuticals Gentle Cleanser for most nights, SK-II Facial Treatment Cleansing Oil for when I need to remove a lot of makeup, and La Prairie Advanced Marine Biology Foaming Mousse Cleanser for an energizing morning wash. My husband is also taking a liking to the La Prairie, and he’s a tough one to please, so it really is that good. I try to wash my face every night, but occasionally I can get a little lazy. On those days, I only trust one of two skin wipes. Simple Micellar Make-Up Remover Wipes is a great new product and Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleansing Cloths is probably my favorite wipe of all time.”
“I also have two holy grail concealers. The first is Clé de Peau Beauté Concealer, which I love because it covers everything with one dab. It has won every award out there and it deserves each one. It covers everything—dark circles, pimples, redness—and leaves a natural finish. Granted, it is $70, but I’ve had mine for two years and it’s still going strong. But, if that’s not in the budget, Marc Jacobs Beauty Re(Marc)able Full Cover Concealer does just as good a job and leaves behind a creamy, even finish that looks likes dewy, radiant skin. One of the perks of working at NewBeauty is that we have weekly manicures in the office. I try all the different polishes, but the one brand I always go back to is Jin Soon. Her polishes come in some of the most beautiful colors with a high-gloss finish that never chips. I top it off with essie Gel Setter and my manicures easily last for two weeks.”
“After three years of not touching my hair, I finally got my hair colored again this summer. One of the main reasons I had stopped coloring was because it was always turning brassy, but thanks to advancements in hair color, I rocked a blonde ombré with not even a hint of orange all season. The amazing Tracey Cunningham did the color, so obviously it was on-point, and I maintained with Redken Blonde Idol Custom-Tone Conditioner for Cool Blondes. It’s a fantastic toner that not only keeps color vibrant, but also leaves my hair softer and more conditioned. Yes, some parts of my shower curtain are now a perma-shade of royal purple, but it’s a small price to pay for great hair.”
“Some women can’t leave the house without mascara, but I wear glasses so I’m much more of a lip person than an eye person. My go-to of the moment is BUXOM Full-Bodied Lip Gloss, which gives a great high-shine finish that is not the least bit heavy, sticky or tacky. Plus, I am obsessed with the cool mint tingly sensation that seems to last for hours. Some of my other favorite beauty products are actually not products you put on your body for extended periods of time. The best hand wash is Nest Fragrances Orange Blossom Liquid Soap and I love a good candle. Tom Dixon Air is what I’m burning at the moment.”
