Generally, October is known for its fall foliage, spooky Halloween costumes and pumpkin-spiced everything, but it’s also associated with breast cancer awareness. Below, our friends at Darling magazine share three innovative ideas for getting involved with this crucial cause—then head over to Darling‘s website to see more ways you can help out!
Since 1985, October has been designated Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the American Cancer Society, it’s estimated that 234,190 new cases of breast cancer, in both males and females, will occur in the U.S. in 2015. Breast cancer ranks second as a leading cause of cancer death in women (lung cancer is first).
While these facts may be scary, rest assured that deaths due to breast cancer have steadily decreased since 1989 due to improvements in both early detection and treatment. Want to help that number continuously go down? Here are some unique ways to give back and raise awareness this October.
1. Put on a bright face.
Clinique, like other skincare companies, makes a donation toward breast cancer awareness and research when you purchase specific products. For instance, if you buy the Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+, it includes a $10 donation and a key charm. Also, Clinique’s Cheek Pop blush in Berry Pop comes with a special pink cosmetic pouch and includes a $4 donation. Both help your skin look radiant and help raise awareness toward breast cancer. Eos also has a limited-edition lip balm and hand lotion pack, which donates a portion of the proceeds to breast cancer research.
2. Go to lunch.
Many places donate a portion of your check’s proceeds to raise breast cancer awareness. For example, at Chomp Eatery & Juice Station located in Santa Monica, CA, a portion of its proceeds are donated to Susan G. Komen with the purchase of any pink lid coffee cup or mason jar smoothie.
With the purchase of several pieces of jewelry from Stella & Dot, a donation will be made to benefit women’s cancer research. One particularly inspiring and amazing piece is the survivor charm, which can be custom engraved with a loved one’s name or date on the back.
