DIY Holiday Wrapping

Paige Boersma, of Studio Bicyclette, is back to share five creative tricks for DIY holiday wrapping that are just as festive as the gifts themselves.

There are so many things to love about the holiday season, and for us, gift giving is definitely near the top of that list. There’s nothing quite like hunting for the perfect gift for that special someone. Though there are many great options out there when it comes to gift wrapping, we always love to get creative, ensuring that our presents will stand out under the tree and have a bit of extra personality. We’re all for jazzing up presents with embellishments you likely already have in your craft drawer, so we put together a few simple ideas.

gold ribbon

white pom-pom

Pom-poms

Pom-poms are a fun and festive addition to any gift. We found a few white fur pom-poms at the local craft store, which gave this gift a cute snowbunny look. You could also play around with colorful or metallic varieties—simply attach them with a hot glue gun. Layering ribbons is also a great way to make a gift look a little more unique, and we’re loving the idea of a sheer polka dot ribbon layered with a silver one on top.

lipstick pin

An enamel pin

Adding a little flair to an outfit has quickly become a favorite way to accessorize, and we love the idea of accenting a classically wrapped gift with a quirky pin. Not only does it add the perfect embellishment to a simple ribbon, but it acts as a teaser to whatever is tucked away inside the box. It’s guaranteed that your gift recipient will be excited to open up this cleverly wrapped present! Here, we used a lipstick pin from Big Bud Press as a box embellishment.

heart stickers

Stickers

If you’re looking for a way to fancy up plain craft paper, look no further than the sticker aisle. The brighter the better, as far as we’re concerned! Don’t be afraid to play around with pattern, either opting for one that repeats, or mixing it up with a few different styles. And, of course, disco balls are always a good idea, so we added a little cluster in the corner of this gift.

unicorn ornament

A tree ornament

Another great way to add a little extra something to a gift is by incorporating an ornament as a gift box topper. Think of it as part of the gift itself, and pick an ornament that will catch the eye of your recipient. They’ll immediately know that the gift is meant for them!

pink nail polish

Washi tape

Easy to find in a variety of colors, prints and textures these days, washi tape is a great way to dress up plain wrapping paper. We actually used the plain white underside of a roll we weren’t so crazy about for this one—it provided the perfect base for our confetti-inspired tape treatment. Simply cut the washi tape into tiny triangles and stick on the wrapped gift in a random pattern.
