Mrs. Lilien's New Hawaiian-Inspired Escape
If you've ever visited Mrs. Lilien's website, blog or social media accounts, you know her style is all about bright colors, glam details and fabulously retro touches. Her home's décor naturally follows suit with this punchy aesthetic, and we love how she has been able to translate her brand's unique philosophy into her real-life space.
Designed in collaboration with Havenly—one of our newest favorite home décor resources—Mrs. Lilien's space is now bursting with irresistibly cute tropical details like flamingos, palm trees and fruit-themed accessories. We're hungry just looking at her juicy lemon pillow! Suffice it to say, the end result looks like something out of a dreamy 1950's Hawaiian getaway, and it's all just in time for chilly winter weather. We took a tour of Mrs. Lilien's staycation-approved space, and you can read on to find out more about the design process, Havenly and how you can beat the winter blues with your own décor.
Why did you decide that it was time for a living room refresh?
Well, we set sail and claimed ourselves a bare-boned island home that practically begged for a full-fledged refresh. I figured, why not start with the living room?
Tell us about your experience working with Havenly to design your space.
Havenly is just how it sounds—an absolute dream come true. I’m totally convinced that the girls at Havenly are home fairies armed and ready to sprinkle magic all over your needy little abode at any given time. But seriously, people need to know that this affordable service is available to them!
Does the makeover authentically reflect your style?
Oh, does it ever?! The great thing about the whole process was the communication we held with the Havenly designers. I was in their ear about brands, artwork, color pairings and all the rest so there was no confusion or blurred lines. They took all that I said and just got it. They ran with it and certainly earned their gold medal at the end of it all. It’s a chic tropical bonanza exploding with color and joie de vivre, and that is exactly what I had asked for!
What three words describe the final living room?
Brilliant, fresh, swanky.
Take a jaunt to the nearest antique shop, raid Etsy vintage shops or grab something off Grandma’s shelf—something bright and full of character. And, in small doses, add in a few irreverent and unforgettable things. Indoor plants work wonders, too!
What is your favorite detail in the completed design?
The seamlessness of the aesthetic and how it combines an entryway, a living room, my office and the dining room all in one big "great room." For once, everything looks just as it was meant to be.
Do you have any tips for readers looking to work with a designer on their own living room?
If you are clueless in Seattle, by all means let your designer take the reigns. But, if you’re drawn to a particular aesthetic or style, be vocal. Share the colors, themes or artwork you are drawn to. Heck, start a Pinterest inspo-board! I’d go to the big dogs first, like Domaine, Lonny and all of your favorite interior stores like: Serena & Lily, West Elm, Jonathan Adler, Dot & BO, One Kings Lane, then I’d select the "dream pieces" and go from there.
How were you able to effectively communicate with your designer?
Just like most amazing collaborations, it all began with a phone call. Shelby is somewhat of an interior-design whisperer, she just ‘got’ me. Yes, she did her research and visually had me dialed before our call took place, but once we spoke, she was able to work her magic and that was the end of that. Additionally, I sent over all kinds of visuals. It certainly helped being a graphic designer and whipping together my own "mood" board, but I did that only because it’s easier for me to communicate visually than any other way. I signed off on the design following the first rendering. Pretty amazing, eh?
What are some interior design takeaways from your new living room that our readers can employ in their own homes to beat the winter blues?
Take notice of the little things. Shelf styling is my latest and greatest interior obsession. Take a jaunt to the nearest antique shop, raid Etsy vintage shops or grab something off Grandma’s shelf—something bright and full of character. And, in small doses, add in a few irreverent and unforgettable things. Indoor plants work wonders, too!
How were you and your Havenly designer able to maximize the size of the space?
Well, I have to say, I feel pretty lucky. The “living room” is essentially one massive "great room." It houses the entryway, the living room, an entertaining area, my office and the dining room. So, with no walls to get in the way, we designed it to be an open space with obvious functionality. There is so much light everywhere and we wanted everything to float within the room, yet have its own real estate. There wasn’t a square inch that was not planned, plotted, discussed and thoughtfully purposed.
