Looking to grow your green thumb this season? We’ve invited Justina Blakeney, founder of The Junaglow, to Glitter Guide today to share her go-to shops and spots for stocking up on pretty succulents, cacti, airplants and more. Read on for her digital guide to LA’s retail plant life, and let us know in the comments if you have your own go-to resources!
There is no object in the world that can breathe life into a home like plants can. That’s one reason I love plants so much—but I also love that they are known to improve air quality and increase the overall quality of life for the people that live with them. Today, I’m excited to take you on a tour of my favorite plantastic destinations in LA. I live in the Silver Lake/Echo Park area and there are a ton of great places to get a little green for your jungalow. Let’s start at our local nursery.
Sunset Nursery is known to have the best edible plant selection in LA, so if you need a few herbs for your kitchen windowsill, this is your spot. They also have an insane airplant collection—airplants need no soil, so they look beautiful perched on a pile of books or as an accent on a coffee table. They also have a ton of tropical plants, which generally thrive in low-light—so if your home isn’t super sunny, this is a good place to go.
Twig & Twine
Next up, let’s grab a little lunch at Sqirl, and then once your belly is full, walk two doors down to Twig & Twine. While this shop is mainly focused on (amazing) florals and cute boutique-y items, it also carries a small selection of well-curated potted houseplants and plantastic items. It also carries my book, The New Bohemians (yay!), which has a whole section on how to care for indoor plants. Lastly, if you’re looking to have some jungalicious bouquets made, this is your spot.
Editor’s note: See our tour of Twig & Twine to find out more about this beautiful shop!
Now let’s head up Sunset to Echo Park’s Hot Cactus. If you weren’t obsessed with cacti in terracotta pots beforehand, you will be now. Watch your step, for this tiny boutique is covered floor-to-ceiling with our spiky friends! Find unusual varieties of cacti here, and Instagram gold.
Now let’s head through the Elysian Valley on into Atwater Village to one of my favorite spots for garden goods: Potted. Potted is like a chic, modern clothing boutique—but for plants. Here you can find a great selection of plants and plant accents (as well as patio furniture, etc.) for all of your garden needs.
