Last week, we teamed up with Victoria’s Secret to share our tips for creating a workout routine and sticking to it. Now this week, newly engaged editor, Abby, is sharing her pre-wedding fitness goals. Read on to find out what she is doing to prepare for the big day—and get the scoop on Victoria’s Secret’s awesome deal going on now!
Since getting engaged over the summer, I’ve decided to really kick my exercise up a notch and work on my fitness. The first step is following my own tips and advice. Practice what you preach, right? So let’s get started…
Ultimately, I’ve set two goals that I’d like to achieve this year. First, I’d love to be in shape for my wedding, which for me, means losing a little bit of the holiday weight and also really toning up. I’m very excited that I’ve chosen my wedding dress, which is actually my aunt’s wedding dress from the ’70s. Right now, it fits, but it is very tight! I’m going to be focusing on toning up my stomach and arms these next few months along with improving my cardio routine.
Secondly, my long-term goal is to make working out an important part of my life. I want it to feel as engrained as my skincare routine.
This year, I’m really enjoying the Victoria’s Secret workout gear. Not only is it cute and colorful, but it fits so well and gives my body the support I need to feel comfortable when working out. I used to work out in baggier clothes because I thought they’d feel better to exercise in, but they ended up making me look much larger than I am and also weighing me down on my workouts. The Victoria’s Secret sports bras give me the shape I’m used to with a regular bra but with the added support I normally get with a sports bra—a combination that makes me feel feminine and ready to kick butt in my fitness routine. In terms of the bottoms, I absolutely love the look and feel of the material! They feel strong and supportive for my legs and yet ultra-breathable! From now until Jan. 14, Victoria’s Secret is offering free shipping and free returns on any sports bra with the code: LOVEBRAS. You can also get a free sport pant with any regular-priced sports bra in stores until Jan. 14.
I’ve mentioned before that I’m not a natural “morning person,” however, there have been several periods in my life where I’ve tried to run every morning before work. Whenever I’ve convinced myself to do that, it either only lasts for a week or two or I majorly beat myself up if I can’t get motivated to go out and run in the morning, which isn’t a great start to the day. At heart, I’m an afternoon and evening exerciser. Whether it’s running or a class, I have a better workout and I push myself more when I exercise later in the day.
Because I work from home and my schedule tends to be on the flexible side, I’m able to take a break in the afternoon and go for a run (which is especially handy in the winter when days are shorter). Essentially, I’m planning on setting aside four afternoons a week and alternate between two days of cardio and two days of strength training and three days of cardio and one day of strength training. For strength training, I’m looking at exercises from Kayla Itsines!
Additionally, wedding planning is stressful and definitely not my favorite thing to do, so incorporating yoga and Pilates every other week is also part of my plan!
My Workout Buddy
It’s always nice to have a workout buddy or someone who is along for the journey and is there for support and to hold you accountable. While we don’t do the same workouts, my fiancé and I ultimately have the same goal—to get in shape for our wedding. Unlike me, Chris is not into running, so it’s not something we can enjoy together. However, he knows a lot about strength training and has his own weight set, which has been helpful and educational when trying to figure out exercises and routines to add to my workouts. We’re also trying to discover more activities that we can do together to help us on our journey. A few things that keep us active are long walks on the beach with our pup Nellie—which also includes the occasional sprints when she chases seagulls—and hiking.
How I Stay Inspired And Motivated
Not only do I follow Victoria’s Secret workout Pinterest boards, but I’ve created my own board called Happy and Healthy. I’ve started pinning everything from workout inspiration to healthy, but delicious, meals and motivational quotes! I’ve also been grabbing the new issue of Shape or Self magazine when standing in line at the drugstore. Additionally, Chris and I do our best to encourage each other and acknowledge our successes (however small they may be). When I leave or come back from a workout he tells me how proud he is of me. That means a lot.
The ultimate motivation for me during my actual workouts is always music. An upbeat playlist fuels my energy and pushes me to work harder. I’m typically more into classic rock, but when it comes to my workout playlist, I’m all about pop music. I’ve created my 2016 workout playlist on Spotify and am excited to share it with you! I’ll be adding to it all year long, so follow along:
