At the start of each new year, many of us are determined to live a little healthier by committing to a fitness routine, eat better and eliminate bad habits, once and for all! New Year’s resolutions often serve as a check-point for health and wellness. However, the average resolution lasts under 25 days (womp womp). We’re here to turn that stat around! Turning resolutions into daily habits is possible, and we’ve got the strategy below.
Be Realistic: Easier said than done, right? Make sure you’re setting small and realistic goals—you’ll be more likely to achieve targets and push harder. Instead of going to the gym five days a week, start off with three. Resolving to never eat your favorite food again is setting you up for failure. Remember, everything in moderation. You have to be realistic, or you’ll fall short.
Talk About It: Don’t keep your resolutions a secret, talk about them! Even better: Find someone who will share your same New Year’s resolution so that you can motivate each other. You want friends and family that will support you through the journey. My fiancé and I are both doing dairy-free for the month of January, and it’s so much easier when you have a built-in support system (I’m down six pounds already!).
Reward Yourself: Keep your eye on the prize! Celebrate your victories by treating yourself along the way. No, this doesn’t mean eating an entire box of chocolate if you’re vowing to eat clean (nice try though!). Instead, treat yourself to new fitness clothes or a relaxing facial. Even better? A nice getaway somewhere warm!
Keep it Up: Experts say it takes about 21 days for a new activity to stick and become part of your daily lifestyle. You’ll get there, you just have to remember to be patient. There’s no better feeling than actually achieving your resolutions, so hang tight!
Track Your Progress: It’s important to write down your resolutions and track progress along the way. Setting up checkpoints will drive you to progress over the course of the year. If you’re looking for an extra boost, download one of these apps that will help you stick to your goals. Technology for the win!
