Thank you, Aerie by American Eagle Outfitters, for sponsoring this post. While this was a sponsored opportunity from Aerie, all content and opinions expressed here are my own.
As we slowly ease into the spring and summer seasons, we have lots to look forward to. Whether you’re most excited for the 2016 kick off to peony season or consistent warm temperatures once again, these balmy middle months offer plenty of excuses for celebrating in the sweet sun.
Of course, this seasonal shift also means that it’s time to break out our old (or to splurge on new!) bathing suits. While fresh flowers and 75 F days are typically pros on our lists, donning a bikini sadly often falls into the con category. This season though, we’re teaming up with Aerie to challenge you to rethink your insecurities and find fresh new ways to boost your confidence! There’s no such thing as a perfect bikini body, so we’re turning our hesitation into excitement for the season to come by playing up our creativity with mix and match options from the Aerie collection. With free shipping and returns on swimwear all season long (and bikini separates just $20 each today only!), we can try out all sorts of colorful, confidence-boosting combinations.
To help set you on the right path, we asked our team of editors to dish on ways that we help ourselves feel confident in our skin. Read on to catch up on our tips, and make sure to leave your own suggestions in the comments below.
Our tips for feeling cool and confident this season:
Taylor Sterling says: “My trick to staying confident during bikini season is eating right and doing something active as much as possible. I don’t do these things to lose weight, but to stay healthy and feel good about myself inside and out. Also, self-tanner is a great way to give yourself a quick confidence boost.”
Caitlin Kruse says: “I always feel the best when I’ve made an attempt to work out or exercise before I bare all—even if it’s only the week before! I also always like to wear a bathing suit that I feel totally comfortable in. Right now, that’s a one-piece and I’m totally fine with that. I’d rather feel great in a one-piece than feel self-conscious in a bikini. Do what’s best for you.”
Abby Sterling says: “I try to make healthier choices when I can in terms of food but I don’t beat myself up when I indulge. I also like to throw in a few sit-ups or squats before I put on my suit—it helps everything feel a little tighter. Ultimately, though, confidence is always more flattering than insecurity. When you focus on having fun, laugh and smile, you’re going to look pretty awesome no matter what you think your body looks like!”
Carrie Waller says: “For me, it’s all about really cool details on my go-to summer suit. My favorite look is a curves-flattering, retro-style one-piece or tankini with lots of pretty ruching and a sweetheart neckline. Those feminine finishes manage to make me feel pulled together and confident while out in the sun.”
Carly Hill says: “For me personally, I always feel my best when I have a tan. My go-to all winter long is using Jergens Natural Glow Daily Firming Lotion. I believe in putting multi-use products to work, and this lotion gradually creates a natural sunless tan, while firming my skin at the same time. Having a glow and tighter skin makes me feel so much more confident before I head out into the sun!”
Erin Sousa says: “My tip is to wear a one-piece over a bikini! But seriously, don’t worry about people staring at you! They are probably worried about how they look. I also love to have a great cover-up when I’m lounging, so I don’t feel overexposed.”
Natalie Borton says: “Because it’s always bikini season here in San Diego, this is something I think about a lot! For me, it’s all about maintaining a healthy body image. Rather than objectifying myself by criticizing parts of my body that I’d change if I could, I like to focus on the function of my body. Though I imagined swimsuits would horrify me after having a baby, the opposite seems to be true. I’ve been able to give myself so much grace now that I’ve really seen my body grow, deliver and nourish a tiny human. Our bodies are amazing and powerful and we shouldn’t feel bad about our so-called flaws just because we have a false idea of what we should look like in our minds.”
Nicole Altavilla says: “Stay confident by drinking lots of water! It will help you stay cool and hydrated on those hot summer days, and won’t leave you with that yucky bloated feeling that is common after drinking sugary or carbonated beverages.”
