As our Orange County, California-based editor, Abby heads into Los Angeles fairly often to attend events for Glitter Guide. Because she typically works from home, when she heads into the city, she takes the opportunity to dress up a bit more than she does on a daily basis. Today, she's sharing her morning and evening routine for when she spends the day in LA—from her makeup regimen to her favorite way to unwind at the end of the day.
Coffee or Tea?
Always coffee! At home I drink Trader Joe's cold-pressed coffee with vanilla almond milk and a little sugar. The store recently came out with organic french press cold brew, which I'm obsessed with. I try to drink a full glass of water before I make my coffee though. It definitely helps me stay hydrated.
What's the first website you look at in the morning?
Besides my email accounts, Glitter Guide, of course!
What do you eat for breakfast?
I used to be really bad at eating breakfast, but I'm getting better now. I usually either eat one-to-two eggs with a quarter of an avocado, or some oatmeal.
What's your morning beauty routine?
If I'm going to an event in LA, I take a quick body shower and usually wash my face during this time. I'm so lazy and hate blow-drying my hair, so I always wash it in the evening and let it air dry. Lately, I've been loving Kate Somerville or bareMinerals cleansers. Then, I'll use Pixi Glow Tonic followed by Pixi Hydrating Milky Serum and finish with Kate Somerville eye cream, bareMinerals face cream and First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Lip Therapy.
Once it feels like my moisturizer has really absorbed into the skin, I'll heat up my curling iron, spray my hair with TREsemmé Heat Tamer Spray and then start applying my makeup. Usually when I go to LA, it's a bit of a longer day, so I really want my makeup to last. I also wear a lot more of it than I normally do, which on a day-to-day basis is typically nothing because I work from home and like to let my skin breathe. I'll typically start with a primer (I'm really loving Make Up For Ever Step 1 Skin Equalizer Primer right now) and then use a layer of L'Oréal Magic Skin Beautifier BB Cream Anti-Redness to even out my skintone a bit. The apples of my cheeks are typically the reddest part of my face, so sometimes I'll apply a little Maybelline Master Conceal in Light/Medium and use a beauty sponge to work it into my cheeks before foundation.
I'm extremely particular about foundation, not because it makes me break out, but because my skin is red, really dry and fairly rough around the cheeks. So many times I'll buy a foundation—even ones that say moisturizing, glowing, luminous—and it will just make my skin look so cakey, patchy and dry. Not a good look. Right now, my new thing is adding a drop of oil to my foundation before I apply it to my face—it's been a total game changer! I'm obsessed because it makes my skin so dewy and glowy. The foundation I'm using right now is Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse. I like the coverage a lot and it works nicely with the oil.
After my foundation, I'll add a little more concealer to my under-eye area and then set it with the banana shade from the Wet n Wild Contouring palette in Caramel Toffee. I'll usually try to do a light contour and some bronzing with my holy grail bronzer, Benefit Hoola, and then add some highlighter to the tops of my cheekbones. Right now, I'm loving Jouer Luminizing Brightening Powder. If I want to go for a strong contour, I'll blend some dark concealer into my skin and top it with a contouring powder to set it. You have to be really careful doing that though, and really blend it in. Afterward, I'll use L'Oréal Brow Stylist Plumper Brow Gel Mascara on my brows. I've been dyeing my brows recently, which I love and makes my brows so easy to do in the morning. I use Maybelline Color Tattoo in Barely Beige on my eyelids and inner corners of my eyelids before curling my lashes and using L'Oréal Miss Manga Mascara on my top and bottom lashes. I think I'm pretty terrible at applying eyeliner—except for a liquid liner cat-eye—so usually I'll just take some dark brown shadow on a flat liner brush and work it into my lash line. For lips, I'll usually use a tinted lip balm like Neutrogena Revitalizing Lip Balm or Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment and pack a lipstick and a gloss in my purse. I apply those once I get to LA. Whew. That seems kind of a lot, but I promise I can do it very fast! I also only do this maybe once a week or every other week depending on my schedule!
After makeup, I'll use my 1.4-inch curling iron to make some waves throughout my hair and then finish with a little texturizing spray to give it some volume. Right now, I like Garnier Fructis Style De-Constructed Texture Tease Dry Touch Finish Spray.
How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?
I like to give myself 45 minutes to an hour when getting ready to go out for the day because I hate to be rushed. Whenever I feel like I'm running late or need to hurry, I get super anxious and I start sweating and breaking out in hives.
What's your go-to outfit?
When it's warmer out, I like a cute sundress, but often I just wear my favorite pair of dark Old Navy skinny jeans, a black crepe blouse from Forever 21 and then maybe a blazer. Then I usually mix things up with some vintage or thrifted jewelry and accessories. I always wear flat sandals or sneakers when driving to LA because I can sometimes be a nervous driver. I just feel more comfortable driving in flats. I usually bring heels in the car (if I want to wear them with my outfit) and change into them when I get to LA, but sometimes I just end up sticking with my sandals or sneakers.
How do you unwind after a long day?
I always feed my dog, Nellie, at 5 p.m., and then when my fiancé, Chris, gets home, we walk her down to the beach. It is such a nice routine because we can sort of decompress, get some fresh air and chat about our day. Nellie loves the beach, too—it's so fun to see her rip around on the sand. Then I always enjoy a nice shower, some cozy loungewear and catching up on some TV or doing some pinning on Pinterest.
What TV shows are you into?
My all-time favorite go-to show is "Friends"—I think I can quote every line. But, I also love "That '70s Show," "Happy Endings," "Sex and the City," "New Girl," "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," "Undateable," "The Mindy Project"—mostly sitcoms. I just finished the whole series of "White Collar," though, and I became obsessed with it! HGTV is pretty much the only reality TV show I watch, which my friends think is really weird, but reality TV isn't really my thing. I'll watch the shows with friends, but I never really choose it on my own. Except for "Chrisley Knows Best"—a (not so) secret guilty pleasure!
What's your evening beauty routine?
Like I said, I always take a shower at night. I feel like it calms me down and relaxes me. When I have a face full of makeup, I'll usually take it off with some cotton pads and Garnier Fructis Micellar Cleansing Water and then go over my face gently with a cleanser or Olay cleansing brush, which I've been using for years. I usually switch up my nightly beauty routine depending on how my skin is feeling. I like to put an oil on it right after the shower. My favorites recently are Nude and Kate Somerville. Before I go to bed, though, I use Kate Somerville DermalQuench Liquid Lift + Retinol Advanced Resurfacing Treatment on my forehead and neck. Then I usually apply an eye cream and moisturizer. My favorite nighttime moisturizer of late is bareMinerals Butter Drench Restorative Rich Cream, but I just finished it! The last thing I'll do is use Mama Mio Boob Tube on my neck. Sounds crazy, but I got that tip from Khloé Kardashian on Into the Gloss. You can buy it on Amazon, and I had a gift card, so I thought "why not try it." I'm hoping it helps to keep my neck tight and firm. We shall see...
What's the last thing you do before you fall asleep?
I kiss Chris and Nellie goodnight, and then secretly check my email again. Such a bad habit.
