If you’re a work-from-home creative looking for real-life inspiration when it comes to your office design, this tour is for you! With the help of Havenly and Mrs. Lilien, creative hustler, Cortney Wood was able to transform her bland and uninspiring office into a space brimming with pretty possibilities.
Cortney’s brand new office is proof that it’s possible to carve out a functional and beautiful zone in just a few hundred square feet. For even more inspiration about partnering with a pro design team to make over your space, be sure to click back to Mrs. Lilien’s Oahu living room makeover!
Why did you decide to tackle an office makeover? What were your goals?
After three years, it was time to bid my kitchen table adieu. In a 500-square-foot California apartment, it isn’t always easy carving out a promising, designated workspace. I came across World Market’s newest Mix & Match desk line and just went for it—well, with the affordable help of the interior design team at Havenly. What before functioned solely as a living room has become a dual-purpose space that houses my (surprisingly) spacious, very productive, well-lit little work corner that I now adore.
How would you describe your design style?
I’m going to wing it and say “modern bohemian.” Interior experts, correct me if I’m wrong here!
What is your favorite piece of décor in the redesigned space?
Favorite detail? The priciest item in the space (surprise, surprise): The Roman shades! Living 15 miles from the California/Mexico border, with south- and west-facing windows and no air conditioning unit, you can imagine just how hot the sun gets in that little lit corner! The Roman shades are cordless with thermal backing blocks (for cold winters/hot summers), maximum light control and were custom-sized to fit my two massive six-foot windows! They are everything—my saving grace.
I also adore my wall! Sally King Benedict has this crazy cool new line of letterpress cards that I had to frame and include. Also, the “Horse Spirit” print and magic hand clip duo both bring an element of power, motivation and strength to the space. And the Swell Caroline tassel necklace adds just the right amount of color needed.
What made you decide to work with Havenly for this project?
After whipping up a most ingenious Oahu living space for Mrs. Lilien, I was infatuated, hooked and so excited. My designer for the project, Kylee, and I kept in close contact over several weeks sourcing products together, exchanging ideas and trying out various theme shifts for the space until it was everything I imagined and more!

What won’t you travel without?
I won’t travel (on planes at least) without a good read and my peppermint essential oil in-hand. It’s the only time I can get through chapters upon chapters without having to battle those daily interruptions. I absolutely despise landings, which is why I carry peppermint with me. A few deep breaths before we touch down and I’m as calm as a clam.
Favorite wall color and why?
I fell in love with Benjamin Moore’s “Decorator’s White (Aura).” I only planned to paint the living room walls of my apartment where my office space resides, but I fell in love and decided to paint every wall—in my bedroom, bathroom and kitchen, too! It brightened up every space more than I ever would have imagined.
Got any tips for others looking to work with a professional design team to make over their space?
Be vocal with what you want out of your space and the things you are most drawn to. Provide visual inspiration and detailed explanations. Once you pass over the reigns, trust the designer you are working with and watch the magic unfold.
What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?
My nephew! He is the thing I adore most in this world. Living less than a mile from him is positively dangerous for my productivity level, which is why I have a picture to suffice my hourly itch to drop everything and go see him.
Lastly, what was the biggest hurdle you overcame throughout the course of your office makeover?
The biggest challenge I came across was finding a storage solution. It was very important to me that the space maintained a simplistic foundation free of clutter. The solution? The CB2 wire hanging baskets, Cleo rattan magazine holder and an out-of-sight file cabinet that can be stored away.
