Colby & Her Home

If that sounds like you, then we all but guarantee that the home of Colby Tice Jaimerena is going to get your interiors-loving imagination running on overdrive!
Despite the fact that she's a bustling mom to two, a wife and homemaker (with a creative role as designer and maker on the side!), Colby has managed to carve precious time out of her wild schedule to create a home that can only be described as the stuff of our dreams here at Glitter Guide. Beyond all of those aforementioned designer details worthy of a good long swoon (think: plants, art, pillows, bold furniture), this collection of bohemian-inspired spaces also sports the kind of love that only a truly nurtured family can manifest.

Tell us everything we need to know about Colby Tice Jaimerena! How did you get to where you are today?
I am married to my high school sweetheart, Kyle, and we have two awesome children, Elle who is 4 years old, and Nixon who is 2. I am the youngest daughter of three girls and grew up most of my life living, loving and breathing the beach and the culture that surrounds it. I have always had a passion for creating, interior design and fashion, and was picky about my clothes and room décor from a young age.
Growing up, my mom was always sewing, crafting or making something. I always wanted to create with her or for her to create something for me, like a top to wear to school the next day. So, I think that creativity was instilled in me from a young age. Growing up, I always knew that I wanted to be a mom and I wanted to stay home with them. After having our daughter, Elle, I quit my job to stay home with her. Staying home has also allowed for my creativity to flow again.
Crafting and decorating have always been my therapeutic outlets. I started making wall fringes for fun during nap time (when I should have been doing laundry!). People started asking me if I sold my fringes or if could teach them how to make them, help decorate their home or give them tips or advice on where to shop or what to put in a particular space. I started making a few inspiration and design boards for friends and family and had so much fun doing it. I also loved taking photos of my décor to see the progress or current arrangement through a lens—iPhones are great for that!
Less than a year ago, Kyle suggested that I create a little space to share my photos of interior design, lifestyle and to sell my wall fringes, which is how @colby_tice was born. He is my number-one encourager and I’m so lucky to have such a supportive, loving husband. It really is the perfect balance for me; I am able to stay home and raise my two fun-loving, precious, sweet babies but I am also getting that creative outlet that I thrive on.
So, here I am today! Loving life, my family, God and all the world has to offer. Eventually, when both kiddos are in school full-time, I plan to pursue interior design for work and create a little online shop for my wall fringes. But I am in no rush and am soaking in every minute of this precious time with my little ones full-time at home. For now, my little space on Instagram is just right. Oh, and don’t forget to check out and play along with #CurrentDesignSituation. It’s a new fun little hashtag that me and a few other awesome Instagram accounts feature each week.
Describe your home in three words.
If I had to pick just three, they would have to be bright, bohemian and inviting.
What are your favorite things to share on Instagram?
I love to share photos of our home and abundance of plants, my sweet kiddos caught in the moment of our daily life and adventures, date nights with my hubs, family, travel, fun little facts about us or from our day, our funny English bulldog, an outfit here and there and an awesome giveaway from time to time. So, I guess I kind of like to post a little bit of everything—but mostly interior design, family and lifestyle.
Who do you love to follow on social media?
Oh man, there are so many awesome Instagram feeds out there, but I’d have to say the daily go-to accounts that I love to check for interior design inspiration are @amberinteriors, @thejungalow and @carlaypage. Their pages are filled with beautiful, inspiring design. They definitely help get my creative juices flowing, for sure. I also love following other fellow mamas who are inspiring and creative, like @marylauren and @theshiftcreative. And let's not forget about the fabulous account of @glitterguide! I like to call you all the modern day Martha Stewart. I love to check your page daily for all things fabulous.
Where would your dream vacation take you?
Being that we are a total beach family, we always love to travel somewhere warm and tropical (and good waves help, too). Kyle is a passionate surfer, and I am happy sitting on the beach all day, treasure hunting, sunbathing and making sand castles with the kids. Our kids love anything to do with the beach and splashing in the water.
So, with that said, I have always wanted to go to Australia and we are actually making it happen this September! We couldn’t be more excited really. Kyle thinks I will never want to come home once I’m exposed to the Australian culture. It’s actually been a place on my bucket list for a long time. So, we are taking the family, renting a motorhome for a week to explore up and down the coast and then renting a home on the beach for the second week. I’m already counting down the days. Give me a beautiful beach, my family, good food, fun cocktails or an ice cold beer, good surf for the hubs and sunshine and that’s my dream vacation.
I never want to be that home where people are scared to mess something up or break something. I want people to feel comfortable and casual. I want the kiddos to run around, jump on the beds, play with their toys and run free out back.
What's your beauty routine?
Being a stay-at-home mama with two little ones, my day-to-day beauty routine isn’t all that glamorous, and I do tend to throw on the good ol' workout pants a couple days a week. But I do try to make an effort to get dressed and ready more days than not.
I’d say my usual beauty routine is either showering before bed and a spray of natural sea salt in my hair for a wake-up-and-go type of bed head. Or, I'll shower in the morning and let my hair air dry a bit while I’m feeding the kiddos breakfast and getting them dressed and ready for the day. Then once they’re all set and ready, I either turn on a show for them to watch or they play in the playroom while I finish drying my hair and do my standard makeup routine, which consists of foundation, bronzer, blush, eyebrows fill-in, mascara, sometimes eyeliner if I’m feeling frisky and always a good lipstick! My mom has always worn super fun lipstick (she’s known for it!) and I think that rubbed off on me. Then I get dressed and off we go to our adventure for the day!
What are your top three coffee-table books for home design inspiration?
Definitely The New Bohemians by Justina Blakeney, Styled by Emily Henderson and Bohemian Modern by Emily Henson. Each of these books I can pick up and read over and over again and they continue to inspire me in different ways every time. There’s always something new I notice or missed the last time I read it. Plus, they’re so pretty sitting on my coffee table.
How has your family influenced the design of your home?
Being a family of four plus a dog, loving to entertain as a family and being devoted beach-goers has definitely been a big influence on designing our home. I never want to be that home where people are scared to mess something up or break something. I want people to feel comfortable and casual. I want the kiddos to run around, jump on the beds, play with their toys and run free out back. But, my husband and I also love a clean organized home and we didn’t want to sacrifice design either.
So, we made some compromises. I gave up the want of a white couch in the family room and went with a light gray instead that wipes clean easily. I found that fabric and material is really everything when designing a home with little ones (and a dog). I wanted white kitchen chairs, so I found some that are white as white but wipe off clean in a jiffy. And baskets. Oh, baskets—how we love you! They store (and hide!) lots of toys and make for easy clean up, too. Patterned rugs and prints are also helpful when designing a home with kids. Throw a patterned rug in a high-traffic area and you won't have to stare at carpet stains all day.
We also have a beach vibe throughout our home that reflects our love for the beach in art and photos of my husband surfing at different spots throughout the world. We have little displays everywhere of our collected treasures, shells and souvenirs from our trips or even local beaches that reflect our love for travel and adventure, as well. I wanted our home to be comfortable, kid-friendly and for it to reflect who we are as a family, without sacrificing design. I like to think I achieved that.
What are your favorite children's brands?
I love Zara Kids and Peek! Every time I walk into either of these stores, I know it’s going to be trouble. They make the cutest kids' clothes and shoes. I always walk out wanting a replica in my size to match. I also love Taylor Joelle Designs, and who doesn’t love Old Navy and Target? They have such cute clothes and shoes for affordable prices!

What are your top places to shop for home furnishings, accessories and clothing?
I love Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie for everything. I also love Thorn & Burrow for home accessories. The company makes beautiful textiles, baskets, poufs, rugs, pillows, etc. You will see a lot of the products throughout my home. I love West Elm for light fixtures and big furniture pieces, like our couch. Overstock, IKEA and a good flea market find are high in my book, too. I found our coffee table (which might be my favorite piece of furniture in our home) from the local vintage market, and also scored one of my favorite rugs.
Target is really coming around with its home department. I live about five minutes away from a Target, so it gets really hard to steer my cart away from the home section and I often come home with a basket of goods. And as far as clothing, my favorite place to shop is Isabelle’s Cabinet. It’s the cutest little boutique located downtown. Everything I’m wearing in these pictures is actually from Isabelle’s Cabinet.
Which apps do you use to edit your photos?
Do you have any tips for those of us looking to add more plants to our homes? Which plants are your favorites to use, and how do you keep them alive?
My main tip would be to start off with easy-to-care-for plants such as succulents and cacti, so you don’t get discouraged. They are low maintenance and require little watering. However, they need lots of sunshine. So, put them in a dark bathroom and they will not thrive. I also love snake plants for their ease as well. I water mine about every 10 to 14 days and it's super happy and growing. Most of my hanging plants are philodendrons, which I water about once a week. I give them a good plant bath and hang them out to dry in the shower. They like indirect light as well. I also love a good fiddle leaf fig tree. They are a little pickier though. They have to have the perfect spot of indirect light and can’t be over or under watered. I give mine about two cups of water once a week and it's been pretty happy in our home.
I also like to mix in some faux plants here and there where a living plant might not survive or in the playroom where it might get tackled and messed with frequently. They actually make some pretty realistic fake plants these days and the best part is they take no effort at all. How great is that?
To some, becoming a “plant lady” can sound overwhelming, but for me I love the look and feel plants bring to the vibe of our home. Plus, they clean and purify your air, too. Being a full-time mama, I can’t have plants that require a ton of attention, so I usually water on Sundays and it takes me about 30 to 45 minutes. So, don’t get discouraged! It's totally doable (even with two little ones) and doesn't take that much time out of the week. It’s just about finding good spots in your home for plants to thrive.
Who is your go-to interior design influence?
Amber Lewis, of Amber Interiors, for sure. She can really do no wrong in my eyes. Everything she touches is pure perfection.
Give me a beautiful beach, my family, good food, fun cocktails or an ice cold beer, good surf for the hubs and sunshine and that’s my dream vacation.
Tell us about your favorite things to do as a family?
We love the outdoors and just being together. We are quite the spontaneous adventure seekers, too. So, give us a free weekend and camping, an all-day beach day, a road trip or traveling together are definitely going to be on the books. My husband and I also love snowboarding together, so we can’t wait to get the kids on the slopes with us next year!
