How did you get started in the fashion industry?
My entry into the fashion industry was definitely by accident. I started my blog in 2011 as a complete hobby when there was a fraction of the people doing it. In fact, I was terrified at first! I was in my last year of college, interviewing for various corporate business jobs and randomly applied to work for Taylor Jacobson in Los Angeles (as a joke). After getting a response, I told her I lived in LA already and hopped on a plane with my mom. It was the most spontaneous move I’ve ever made. I found an apartment in one day and I’ve lived here ever since. I truly believe the move allowed me to take my blog to the next level eventually, and working for a celebrity stylist like Taylor helped me learn the ropes of the industry in LA.
What made you realize this house was the one?
My husband, Chandler, and I were crammed in my original one-bedroom apartment with basically two apartment’s worth of furniture. Let’s just say I was going a little crazy working from home in this situation. We took a month or so to look around at apartments, went to a zillion open houses and did as much research as possible to get a feel for the market and our wish list. I remember the moment we walked into this house—with every step I took inside I fell in love, and I was able to turn nearly every negative aspect into a positive, which is a sure sign I love something. In the West Hollywood/Beverly Hills area, it is a huge deal to have a backyard and garage. Having all of these components made it a must-have for us.
After moving in, what was the first step you took in the overall design process?
I took on pretty much the entire home at once from scratch in terms of decorating, but the first goal was the master bedroom. I designed a space on my computer and started the ordering process. Randomly, I switched out all light fixtures next.
The aspect of mixing and matching high and low pieces from all over to get one cohesive vibe intrigues and excites me. I think I’ve always had a little bohemian spirit within me and it has definitely come out in my décor style.
Was it difficult to merge your style with your husband’s taste when it came to your bedroom makeover?
It was surprisingly easy to merge my husband’s taste and my style; and let me tell you, we didn’t always think it would be! I started small, mixing the darker, more masculine pieces early on and eventually started to like it better than my girly bachelorette-pad style. Now, he just lets me do my thing and trusts I won’t come home with a bunch of hot pink (I save my girly side for my office).
How is your décor style influenced by your love of fashion?
I love creating a scene, whether on my body in the form of an outfit or a gallery wall in my home. I dig the full picture and I especially enjoy creating a scene for a specific look, which is where my work gets really fun. What’s one thing you love to do when you need a boost of self-confidence?
Great question! When I need a little boost in self-confidence, I’ll either sign my behind up for a spin class and/or get a spray tan. I know it sounds superficial, but I’m just being honest! Everyone feels better tan. If all else fails, a little retail therapy never hurt anyone.
What items need to go in everybody’s next closet clean out?
Do away with the excessive fringe items and anything that doesn’t fit you properly. No one has time for ill-fitting garments!
What’s the one wardrobe essential you can’t live without it?
It’s a three-way tie between a good pair of denim, a nice blazer and a flowy silk blouse/cami. Each can be worn so many ways and on so many different occasions!
What exciting projects are on the horizon for you?
I have several exciting projects lined up, but I’m most excited about adding a lot more videos to my brand. Along with a new site to launch this summer, I will have videos live each week covering a wide variety of topics including fashion, interior design and lifestyle, beauty, travel and everything in between. I am especially excited about an entertaining series we’re working on featuring (finally) my new home. I’ve taken a break from creating as much home content over the past year as we searched for this place and decorated it. I’m a perfectionist and am weird about revealing everything until it’s complete, so I’m chomping at the bit to share my home. I am putting the finishing touches on a few areas and will have a home tour ready by late summer.
Tell us why you love living in LA!
I love the creativity and the hustle of LA. People here are relentless, and whether they reach whatever goal they have or not, they are going to pound the pavement trying. I love the aspect of people coming to LA to follow their dreams. It’s motivating. I also love having a bird’s-eye view into the fashion and entertainment industries. The weather, shopping, beach, etc. have nothing to do with it (wink wink).
What was your favorite part of decorating your bedroom?
I put together this room over the course of almost a year, and I am so proud because it was not easy! I had a vision, which is great in theory, but makes things take double the time because I am searching for something extremely specific. For example, the picture above our bed. I knew I wanted this piece, and only this piece, so I had to search high and low for it. I definitely took my time (like I’ve done with the rest of the place), and although I may have switched things around and out a zillion times, I’m beyond pleased with the result. With that said, my favorite part of decorating the room was finding each piece that I envisioned and putting it all together. It’s fun for me!

What are your secrets to getting the best beauty sleep?
I’ve been paying close attention to my sleep habits over the past year, and I can confidently say they have improved:
- Drink plenty of water. It seems obvious, but most of us do not drink enough. So many things change when we are properly hydrated!
- Turn off the TV.
- Pick up a book and put your phone on ‘night’ mode before bed. Do not Insta-stalk for an hour until you fade off.
- Get in bed one hour earlier, even if you don’t go to sleep right away.
- Find a good hydrating sleep mask and a thorough night cream. I love the Shiseido Ibuki Beauty Sleeping Mask and SkinMedica Retinol Complex, or Kate Somerville RetAsphere 2-in-1 Retinol Night Cream.
- For me, a fan and humidifier are musts in our bedroom at night. The humidifier is great for your skin!
How do you see Devon Rachel the brand evolving in the next few years?
My brand has already evolved so much in the first five years and it’s exciting to take it to the next level over the new few. You will see a new-and-improved, modern Devon Rachel with a much bigger emphasis on interior design and lifestyle. I’ve developed this passion for home/lifestyle/entertaining that I want to explore that in combination with fashion now that I have the space and capacity to do so. As I mentioned before, the DR presence will expand to weekly videos on Youtube and I couldn’t be more excited to share a larger portion of my life and ideas in a more personal way. I am also throwing the idea around for an e-commerce store, so I’m definitely staying busy!
Do you have a favorite DIY project you’ve completed in this space or your home in general?
We are currently in the process of creating a unique closet office space for me and I think we saved the best for last!
