Below, fashion designer Rachel Roy explains the strategies she has put into place to add the maximum amount of productivity to her day!
What inspires you to get out of bed every morning?
Being creative. The entire design process is fascinating and, quite honestly, like breathing for me—it is one area with zero doubts. With every style and each collection I design, I always endeavor to provide beautiful pieces for confident, modern women. My daughters, Ava and Tallulah, also keep me grateful, grounded and inspired.
What is your morning routine?
I like to do yoga and meditation when I can fit it in—it helps me to stay balanced. I also have mornings like most mothers rushing to get their children to school. For us, it is two different schools in opposite directions, so breakfast and other morning activities are hurried. I always have my iPhone in one hand, so I’m constantly on email and in touch with my wonderful team who keeps it all going. I make conscious choices to make mornings happy and not stressful, as it is easy to let stress take over in the morning. The more sleep, the happier we all are!
They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day—what does your breakfast each morning look like?
I eat organic, fresh food as much as possible, but always in the home. Typically, that will be a decaf tea, toast, freshly squeezed orange juice or a smoothie packed with fruit, vegetables and chia seeds. On the weekends, I’ll often opt for avocado on multigrain toast with poached eggs and a latte made with almond milk.
What are your top three tips for staying organized?
The Life (my digital lifestyle guide) offers a variety of tips—I have a lot of advice to offer! If I had to distill it into three key tips, I would say forward-plan, communicate with the people in your life and try to maintain a healthy level of work-life balance. The older I get, the more I realize just how valuable time is, and giving my time to someone is a generous act and vice versa. I try to make conscious choices as to who I give my time to because that time can never be taken back.
Where do you feel most productive, and why?
I feel most productive when I’m creating, helping others or working on fighting for the rights of women and children who do not have access to the help that we do. For example, designing a new collection, working on a collaboration, counseling young girls or raising money for organizations like World of Children, that fund activists and heroes that spend their lives fighting for children.
How do you balance being a designer, entrepreneur, philanthropist and mother all at once?
I’m passionate about each of these things, so my enthusiasm keeps me motivated. It does take organization to balance each of these successfully, and that means working collaboratively with people I trust, delegating where necessary and looking at the bigger picture, while being focused on the finer details.
What is your ideal mid-day pick-me-up?
Lemon water or tea, meditation or speaking to my family and friends.
What do you like to snack on throughout the day to keep you energized?
Organic, fresh food, where possible. I will often have cold-pressed juices while on the go, almonds and walnuts and, if I’m at home or in the office, sometimes I’ll have carrot and celery crudités with hummus or clementines.
What do you like to do with your (probably very limited!) free time?
I love to travel, spend time with my family and friends, practice yoga and meditate. I love to cook at home, but also like to venture out to cafés and restaurants. I particularly love Giorgio Baldi for dinner in Santa Monica or anything by the sea.
Favorite workday outfit: Go!
My style is classic with a twist or edge. On a typical workday, I’ll wear a tailored blazer, trousers or Levi’s 501 jeans and a bow blouse—it’s all about balance.
What are five items every woman needs in her work wardrobe?
A LBD dress that suits her style, shape and needs; a crisp white shirt; neutral, strong-shouldered blazer; tailored sexy pants and a pencil skirt.
What are some of your favorite makeup products for using while on the go?
My favorite item is Bobbi Brown’s foundation stick in ‘Honey’—it’s the perfect cover-up for dark circles or blemishes. I also love Charlotte Tilbury’s ‘Color Chameleon’ eyeshadow pencils because they are so creamy, thick and easy to put on. Tom Ford’s lipsticks are ideal for a quick refresh, but mascara is my favorite eye-opening go-to because it makes me look more rested. I am currently using Armani.
What items do you always keep in your purse?
Cellphone, credit cards, Eau Thermale Avène face spray, Dior moisturizing lip glow, hand sanitizer in peppermint citrus, a Tom Ford extra-large bronze compact mirror, Jo Malone ‘Red Roses’ cologne and a shell from vacation for good luck.
