When we last spoke with designer, Lauren Christine Henno, she taught us how to decorate with neutral colors without being boring. Today, the clever creative is back to explain the opposite end of the spectrum: How to decorate your home using a palette full of bright hues. Read on for her five tricks to make the look work in practically any space—whether you’re making over your bedroom, office, living room or the entire house!
1. Accent Furniture
A piece of accent furniture in a bright color is a lively way to add an unexpected style note in any room. Try an ottoman, decorative basket or even a chair in a bright solid shade that complements your space. This works especially well in rooms that lean more toward a neutral palette.
Plants are great accessories for adding bold, yet natural, color to a space. From small table plants, larger indoor planter boxes and hanging planter baskets, there are so many options to try when it comes to adding rich green color to your space. Plants add vibrant personality, yet still give off natural, organic vibes.
Pillows and throw blankets tossed over simple white linens or a pastel-colored rug under a neutral couch can bring pattern and color to any room. These inexpensive accents not only add a variety of layered textures and color, but patterns, too! There is nothing like topping a beautiful white-based bed with colorful boho-patterned pillows. Plus, these lightweight details are easy to move around as your mood changes.
A large piece of eye-catching artwork adds color and creates a nearly instantaneous focal point in your room! Try hanging framed abstract prints, photos and small vintage paintings in a gallery wall formation above your sofa, dining room buffet, desk or your bed. This is a great way to mix all of your favorite colors and patterns together in one large installation. Just make sure to invest in pieces that speak to you by artists whom you love! Tell a story in your space through artwork that elevates and complements your personal aesthetic, and the finished look will almost always be a success.
5. Personal Details
Books and other mementos found while traveling are great ways to add color in a personal, one-of-a-kind way. Be intentional with your mantel and shelving displays, filling the surfaces with pieces that stand out in your mind. Keep it clean, yet colorful, giving each piece room to feel showcased! Colorful vases, bowls and even large rocks or crystals, when eclectically mixed among one another, are perfect for these types of meaningful displays.
