What do you get when you combine a vintage bus, giant heart-shaped balloons, fancy donuts, plenty of Champagne and eight boss ladies? A Galentine’s Day fête for the books! Read on for the party details care of Liz Martin of Charleston Weekender.
First, a question: what on earth is Galentine’s Day? Amy Poehler’s “Parks and Recreation” character, Leslie Knope, perhaps explained it best: “Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.” I asked a group of my favorite female creatives to join forces to help make our own Galentine’s soirée, and below you’ll find our recipe for creating your own fabulous lady date with your favorite gal pals.
1. Decorate Everything.
Ashley Carrington, of All Dressed Up, and I took to Pinterest to get inspiration for a celebratory setup. My only goal was to incorporate balloons and my Turkish towels as table runners. Ashley took it to the next level with a delightful color palette involving perfect pops of mint green. Candice from Yoj Events chipped in her awesome event design skills to really make our tablescape idea come to life. Thankfully, she understands that it’s absurd for great florals and fine china to stay hidden away and reserved only for fancy occasions. She also created a “relax and stay awhile” vibe with cozy pillows placed next to a low family-style table setup.
2. Make an Entrance.
It’s always more fun to get to your soirée as a group. You could all rent bikes or even just ride together in a cab to your destination, but we are such fans of this vintage bus! Her name is Bonnie, and we had the best time riding on the bus with the music cranked way up! Our girl gang decided to go all out with coordinating looks from Escapada Living, but you and your ladies could pick a color theme or all throw on old bridesmaid dresses—anything that let’s everyone know you came as a group and you aim to have fun!
3. Give the Gift of Handmade.
Valentine’s Day has always been my favorite holiday for gifting, and I love mailing out fun Valentines. No one expects it and it gives me something to look forward to mid-winter. When your friends all happen to be great makers, you ask them to chip in so everyone gets to enjoy a little hand-crafted goodness. The Blue Root’s gorgeous wooden gift boxes were the perfect vessel to fill with goodies we each provided. The Tiny Tassel added her earrings, I tossed in my hand-felted heart soaps and The Town Serif made fun Valentines and inspirational journals for the group. Fancy donuts from ABCD Cakes were the perfect sweets to take home to be enjoyed later on. Macarons are also always a good idea.
4. Get Festive With Your Refreshments.
The Cocktail Bandits are always who I call on when I need an exciting take on a basic drink. For our brunchy gathering we, of course, had Champagne, but we needed a little extra treat. The “curly ladies who talk cocktails daily” concocted some fabulous coffee cocktails that we served in my mismatched wedding china. Our spiked coffee beverages paired perfectly with a two-tiered cake. As we all know by now, a party without cake is just a meeting, so this naked cake was just the ticket!
“It’s always better when we’re together” is a motto that really held true for our fabulous fiesta. By chipping in our talents, no one had the stress of hosting and planning some over-the-top party, and we were really able to appreciate each others’ contributions. Cheers to the gal pals in your life—they deserve to be celebrated often!
