By now, you’ve surely heard about capsule wardrobes. We’ve written several posts about them on Glitter Guide, and Caitlin’s tried them out a few times herself. She created a maternity wardrobe for her first pregnancy and found it to be such a success that she’s doing it again this time around. One caveat though, she’s trying to only buy non-maternity pieces! Here are a few tips for putting together a fall capsule wardrobe of your own and Caitlin’s picks for pieces (all non-maternity) that you’ll be able to mix and match all season long!
I love capsule wardrobes for a few reasons. After you’ve created one, you never have to stress about what to wear, and getting dressed is fun and EASY! It also forces me to stick with a shopping budget, not make impulse purchases and get the most wear out of my clothes each season.
Tips for creating your own capsule wardrobe:
- Start by figuring out what color palette you want to use this season—have an idea in your head before you move to the next step. For some fall fashion inspiration, check out this post and our Pinterest board!
- Evaluate what you have, what you need and what you can store or donate.
- Empty out your entire closet—you’ll only want to have items hanging that are part of your capsule!
- Set a budget and make a shopping list for the pieces you want to shop for.
Now it’s time to shop!
Nothing says fall like a cozy sweater. Be sure to stock up on a few different styles (a chunky knit crew neck, a cardigan and a thin sweater for layering).
This style isn’t going anywhere. In fact, we are considering it a new wardrobe staple. Tuck in your blouses and slouchy sweaters—whether you opt for a skinny leg, crop or looser fit.
This style was popular during the spring and it’s making a return for fall. We love it with flats, booties and heels alike.
Every capsule needs a fun, trend-driven piece like overalls that you can mix and match with tops, tees and sweaters!
These are a tried-and-true work wardrobe necessity! The black pant often gets a bad rap, but thanks to several on-trend styles, you can incorporate this pant seamlessly into your capsule wardrobe. You’ll find it goes with nearly all your tops and is perfect for more formal occasions. We’re partial to the style that’s slightly cropped above the ankle.
Wear it alone, or layer it under a sweater (or your overalls) for work or play. You’ll be surprised at how versatile a silk (or satin) top is in your wardrobe! Opt for a more classic buttoned-up version or have fun with a peplum hem, pattern, ruffle or neck-tie.
It used to be rare to find a chambray top in any style except button-up, but we love all the new options available now. We wear this fabric year-round—from denim on denim looks to pairing it with black pants or skirts!
The ultimate layering piece, every wardrobe needs a striped tee or top.
We love the look of a little lace peeking out from a knit sweater. Be sure to add a silk tank in any color or style to your capsule for a great layering piece.
This is another fun, on-trend element to add to your capsule wardrobe. Plus, Taylor is a big fan of the look!
One of our favorite trends for fall is a ’90s throwback to the slip dress. It works on its own, under a blazer or worn under a cozy cardigan.
Another retro-inspired piece that we can’t get enough of, the A-line skirt has been popular the past few seasons in both denim and different fabrics. When paired with booties and a chunky knit sweater, it’s the epitome of fall!
The midi skirt is a must during the fall because it covers up more leg and looks super cute with a form-fitting top.
We all probably have at least one denim coat in our closet by now, but update yours this season with something a little more on trend (think: emboridery or sherpa-lined collar).
Fall is a notoriously fickle time when it comes to the weather. One day it feels like summer, the next morning there’s a chill in the air, which is precisely why you need a lightweight coat in your wardrobe for layering!
