Caitlin’s Living & Dining Room Makeover

Caitlin's Living & Dining Room Makeover

It’s been about a year and half since my husband and I bought our first home, and while it’s been such an exciting journey, being first-time homeowners has also come with a huge learning curve! I’ve always loved decorating, but was truly stumped with our living and dining space because it’s all one common area (which I both love and hate)! Since we moved in, it’s never really felt like “us,” and it left me uninspired so I never got around to trying to make it our own. You can see how it looked before in this post, but I quickly decided it was a little too feminine. I moved our Lulu & Georgia rug to the playroom and took down the pink floral artwork, leaving it quite sparse for the past year. I turned to the professionals at Havenly for help in pulling together my vision, coming up with a way to divide the space and create a cohesive look!

Working with my designer, Shelby, has been a dream. Over the past few months, we’ve gone back and forth on mood boards, design mock-ups and product selections and she’s been so patient with me! The first thing we decided was that our huge sectional needed to go, freeing up room for three chairs and making the space feel much more roomy. I picked this sleek sofa from Article, and couldn’t be more pleased. While I really, really wanted one of Article’s velvet sofas, the Seasalt color of the Burrard works perfectly for our growing family, hiding dog fur and toddler crumbs, and I love that it’s functional for our needs, but also such a sleek design.

We also replaced our oversized leather chair from Article (moved to our guest room) with the Nord chair from Article. It takes up much less space and is more practical for the room but still brings in that warmth of the leather that I love.

Finding a rug proved to be a challenge. At first, I had the rug from our bedroom One Room Challenge in the space for a few months, but it just wasn’t working. We needed some color, but nothing too bright. When eSale Rugs reached out about trying one of their rugs, I got lost on its site for HOURS looking through all of the options. There are so many rugs to pick from, it’s almost overwhelming! I love that eSale Rugs has both vintage and new rugs that have a vintage feel. I ended up with this beautiful vintage rug (here’s a really similar one). I just love the color it adds to the room and has such a timeless and classic feel that I’ll love for years.

We added a set of chairs to divide the living and dining area and moved the buffet over to fill up the open space on the wall—I love the new layout! After a year and half, we finally hung curtains and threw away our mini blinds and it really makes it feel so cozy and homey.

While I loved our round dining table, we really needed to be able to seat more than four people. I knew that a longer table would help fill up the wasted space we had between the two living areas previously (see here) and Shelby sourced this one from CB2. The bench is also a fun addition and easily tucks under the table to save space.

This vintage mirror was a great score a few weeks ago and just the piece I was looking for to complete the room. I’ve had my eyes on the beautiful mirrors at Anthropologie for a while but just couldn’t make the splurge and was so delighted to find this one that I know no one else will have!

I also struggled with what to hang over the couch for the past year and a half. We’ve had a large gallery wall and a small gallery wall and then most recently, nothing! It felt so sparse and sad. I saw an image on Pinterest of an art ledge hanging over a sofa and thought that would be the perfect solution for the space—it would fill up the wall and allow me to hang art without doing a gallery wall. I love this one from Minted! It comes in several different colors and styles and it will be fun to easily change up the art and décor seasonally (it’s decked out for Christmas now)!
