A Love Letter To Overalls

overalls

Visit my Instagram and you will read “probably in overalls” in my bio. Why, you ask? Cause it’s true. Overalls are a weekly wardrobe staple for me and have been since I was 4 years old. Overalls feel like me. So much so that people often send me comments and DMs about my overalls and when they wear overalls, and they ask me where they can find the best pair. I didn’t set out to be an ambassador for this polarizing fashion trend, but I’m happy to be.

Let’s start with the obvious, they are insanely comfortable. Having a bloated day, grab those oversized overalls and you’re good to go. Feeling lazy and just want to wear an old T-shirt? Pair them with overalls and you somehow feel like you have put together an “outfit.” Like ruffly tops but don’t want to feel too girly? Mix that girly-girl blouse with a pair of dingy overalls and you’ll feel like you should have your picture snapped on the streets. I could go on and on, but the bottom line is overalls are the lazy fashion girl’s best friend.

We can probably all agree that overalls look super cute on kids, but there are many of you questioning if they are right for you. Well, coming from a grown woman with experience, there are going to be people who have a strong dislike for your overalls. I’m 36 and wear mine without shame, because I know that they make me feel good and at this point that is all that matters. My husband is not a huge fan, but he has come to accept that they come with the territory. That’s the thing, if you love them but feel afraid to wear them, just go for it. Life’s too short not to wear overalls!

This may be one of the best times to embrace your inner middle-school-overalls-loving-self! ’90s fashion is back in a huge way, making overalls sort of cool again. They are easier to find and you can try all different styles and find the one that makes you feel good. Or you can be like me and have a closet filled with all the styles.

Being the overalls connoisseur that I am, I am eternally on the quest for the perfect vintage pair of overalls. This is an expensive and possibly futile mission. In the overalls club, we know that there is that magical, unicorn pair that are distressed, soft, slightly oversized, but not too baggy, not too long, but not too short, that are waiting to find their way onto our bodies, and we will stop at nothing to be united with them. That’s why you will see me trying to squeeze into a vintage pair I found that are so close to perfect, but tragically are too small. That’s why you will also see me at General Store rummaging through its handpicked selection that are insanely overpriced, but well worth it if you find The One. My hopes are I will stumble upon them at a Goodwill. Someone will have discarded them thinking they were too old and too ugly, but then I will find them and give them the best home they could have ever imagined.

Sounds crazy, but so are so many love stories.
