How To Make Time For Yourself When You’re Busy AF

Our contributor, Katherine Hilton, talks about the importance of making time for yourself to live a happier life.

We’ve all heard that one excuse that goes a little something like, “Ugh, I wish I had time to, but I’m just SO busy.” I’m certain that we have all given that excuse, as well. These days, having your whole life at your fingertips can make it extremely hard to shut off and take a breather. While it’s amazing to be able to take a call while simultaneously responding to an email, it can also make you feel like your head is being pulled in a million different directions.

One thing I want to work on this year is not using the excuse, “I’m too busy,” as a reason to not do the things I truly love. If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that there is always going to be work to do, laundry to put away, dishes to clean and emails to answer, but there isn’t always going to be enough time to fit it all into one day. The to-dos can wait, but your self-care cannot.

The key to making time for yourself when you’re busy AF is realizing that you’re busy AF.

It’s so easy to get lost in that “the work never ends” mentality. Sometimes, as humans, we get so deep in it that we forget what we’re even working for. Our to-do lists become this evil, pesky creature in our everyday lives instead of an exciting, helpful tool. We get so wrapped up in the day-to-day grind that we don’t even realize that we haven’t showered in three days and are running out of paper towels. When you take a second to look at it that way, it sounds kind of pathetic. Is keeping yourself that busy really worth not making time for your own cleanliness? I don’t think so.

Once you realize that you’ve really got to start taking your self-care more seriously, it becomes easier to visualize actually accomplishing it. Start small by vowing to do one thing a day that is entirely just for you. Whether it’s showering, taking an hour to workout or watching an episode of your favorite TV show, make the time for it. Work, chores, homework, plans and whatever else is keeping you busy AF will always be there. But in order to do all of those things that keep you so busy, you must prioritize your self-care.

Schedule “work” time and “you” time.

If you know you have a deadline you need to hit at 3 p.m., dedicate and schedule a few hours before solely to get that one task done. After you’ve worked hard to accomplish your deadline, schedule the 15 minutes or so after to do something that brings you joy. Whether it’s getting up from your desk and taking a walk, scrolling through Instagram or Pinterest, or doing a short guided meditation, schedule it in.

Prep for your busy weeks.

When you know that you have a week or month that is going to have you on a really tight schedule, do yourself a favor and prepare for them as much as you can. Meal prep, place that Amazon order, clean your house, so that you don’t have to think about it during your busy times. That way, you’ll be able to use any free moments on yourself instead of worrying about those lingering chores.

Finally, know that there is always time for you to do something for yourself. You just have to realize it and make it a priority. This is your reminder that the world is not going to end if you take those 20 minutes to relax with a face mask and a cup of tea! You’ll be able to perform better in your everyday life because of it!
