Our Business Manager Shares Her Massive Outdoor Living Area Makeover

Summertime is all about dining al fresco, staying outside until the sun goes down and just enjoying the longer days.

We live in a small house, a little less than 800 square feet. We do, however, have a 1,000-square-foot deck that we’ve basically ignored for the last 3 years. I’m almost embarrassed to show you the “before” photos. With two large dogs and a 3-year-old, it has become, for lack of a better word, a disaster.

That poor, sad little plant.

There are a lot of things I love about our deck. It’s two levels, has an amazing view and still offers a large yard underneath for the dogs to run. Since the yard isn’t really human-friendly, the deck is where we spend our time. Now that my son is getting bigger and we’re spending more and more time out there, it was time to spruce it up. Our deck is split into two levels, so we decided to makeover the top level as a “relaxation/entertaining” zone, and leave the second level as the kid-zone. If you caught my dining room nook makeover, you’ve already heard about my love of Home Depot.

I’ve never been one to go to 20 different stores to find what I want. Who has time for that? Not this girl. I love Home Depot because it’s my one stop shop for everything in my home. So when it was time to give this outdoor space a much needed makeover, I turned to my trusty Home Depot.

One of the things I always try to keep in mind when ordering furniture is my husband’s comfort. As a 6-foot-5-inch man, his requirements for comfort are a lot trickier than mine at 5 feet 3 inches. I can’t tell you how many couches and chairs I’ve bought and had to return because they weren’t accommodating for his extra-long length. This outdoor living set was perfect because it has deep seats and was comfortable enough for him to enjoy. I picked this color because of the outdoor factor, and also our dogs, who I know sleep on the couch when we aren’t looking. This color added a fun pop of brightness to the deck but will also help conceal dirt.

I also finally found the hammock of my dreams. I’ve always wanted one for the deck, and this one not only matched perfectly with the seating set, but was a super steal.

I loved these geometric ceramic planters in soft pastel. I hung one in each corner of the pergola for a fun accent.

One of the biggest things we missed about having a usable yard was our garden. So when we started mapping out the deck makeover, I knew I wanted to get a garden bed. It was so fun taking my kid to Home Depot to pick out our flowers and veggies. We built the garden bed together, and planted all three garden boxes once it was done. My son watered them and sang each one a song so they would grow 😂.

Our deck is blazing hot in the summer. Before the makeover, it was basically unusable until around 3 p.m. when the sun moved over to the other side. We got a really nice sunshade for the pergola, and this beautiful fringe umbrella, which makes me feel like I’m at a resort when I’m lounging in my watermelon pool 😉.

I love being outside, whether it’s for entertaining, working in the fresh air or just enjoying a good book while I snuggle my pups. Cocktails just taste better outside on a warm summer night. If you’re looking to redo your own outdoor space for summer and beyond, scroll down for sources or head to Home Depot to find your perfect setup!
