If you haven’t heard of Marie Kondo yet, you have probably been living under a rock. Or a giant pile of clothes that you desperately need to clean out STAT. So, free yourself from the stuff already! Our contributor, Kaleigh Glaza, is here to help you on your path to a cleaner home and happier life.
To recap, the Marie Kondo Method, otherwise known as the The KonMari Method, “is a system of simplifying and organizing your home by getting rid of physical items that do not bring joy into your life.”
And that seems simple, right? Why wouldn’t you want to bring joy to your life? Even if you spark joy little by little as opposed to tackling your whole life in one day…a start is a start. So, let’s start! Let’s Marie Kondo one thing at a time until we find joy. Let’s go…
If you’re scared to give things up or clean things out all in one fell swoop, make a list of small spots to start with. Your junk drawer, your kitchen countertops or your laundry room are good places to start because they will make a huge difference with not a huge time commitment. Having that first successful and energizing step will encourage you to clean out your next room and the rest of the house.
Go for the bathroom
You will be shocked (I repeat – shocked!) at how much random stuff is hiding in your bathroom. And this is the easiest stuff to get rid of because a lot of it will be expired or too old to use anyway. Clean out, clean up and just bask in the sparkling clean.
Don’t tackle your whole closet all at once
Clean out your shoes first. Then your jewelry and accessories. Then your T-shirts. And on and on from there! The thought of putting every single item of clothing I own onto my bed at once almost made me break out in hives. So, I started small, and tackled it section by section. This made it easier to manage from a time perspective, and it was so fun to watch my pile of donatable items grow with each new project.
Go outside the house
Marie doesn’t talk much about this, but we also want you to look at what in your whole life doesn’t bring you joy. Clean out your inbox by unsubscribing to email lists you never read. Clean out your fridge and kitchen cabinets from food you haven’t (and won’t) eat. Even clean out your calendar! Look at the classes, events and people who make you truly joyful, and focus on those things. Why stop with your closet? Let’s spark joy all over the friggin’ place!
