4 Easy Ways To Increase your Sustainability This Spring

It is no secret that Mother Earth has taken a hit over the past couple of years. Thankfully, sustainability and consciousness about the environment has started to increase in the general population. Most of us are polluting the earth every single day with our habits and don’t even know it. These are four extremely simple things that you can implement into your everyday life to be more sustainable. A little goes a long way, and while it might not feel like much, your efforts to help keep our Earth clean count! Our contributor, Katherine Hilton, is here with four ways you can be more sustainable during your everyday life.

  1. Invest in a to-go coffee mug/water bottle: This is such a simple way to reduce your everyday waste. Just think about it: if you are an avid coffee or tea drinker, how many times a day are you stopping at your local coffee shop for a pick-me-up? The majority of the plastic cups at coffee shops are not landing in recycling bins and are therefore creating more waste on our Earth. By investing in a to-go mug, you can bring it with you to your fav coffee joint and refill it. Bonus: it also might inspire you to bring your coffee or tea from home in the mornings, spending less money on that boujee latte. I have this one and use it every morning! The same can be said for a reusable water bottle, too!
  2. Stainless steel straw: This is a super simple hack to help keep you sustainable. As you probably know, plastic straws are one of the worst things for our environment given they are made from plastic, which never breaks down. In the U.S. alone, 500 million single-use straws are used every single day, polluting our oceans and harming marine life. By getting a stainless steel straw, you can help minimize the amount of plastic that ends up in our oceans. They are quite inexpensive on Amazon and come in packs so you can leave one in your bag for when you are out at a restaurant or on the go!
  3. Save your containers: This is one of the easiest, most overlooked ways to help reduce your waste. Save your containers! Whether it’s a leftover salsa jar or a container your takeout came in, give it a good clean or throw it in the dishwasher and reuse it! One of my girlfriends saves all of her salsa or glass jars, washes them out and then uses them as glasses to drink from. It makes for a cute little collection of jar glasses and is a great way to recycle the glass!
  4. Bring your own bags: Again, a very simple and easy way to be more sustainable this spring. I always leave one reusable bag in my backpack at all times in case I need it. Many shops such as Lululemon and Free People have great shopping bags that can be used again for groceries, etc. Some stores such as Trader Joe’s even have a raffle or reward you can get for bringing your own bags!
